G-rad is contemplating putting a return the days of the zone. As a Geelong fan I love it! So many Falcons boys.

"A radical AFL proposal to introduce club-branded academies and zones across the competition looks certain to be the headline act emerging from Gillon McLachlan's national review of the game.

The back-to-the future plan is understood to have growing support among the 18 clubs and was a key discussion point at Thursday's meeting of the AFL Commission and club presidents."

As long as the dicks link us with the Footy Factory.Currently the Falcons are linked to Werribee FC and the North Ballarat Rebels I think are linked to Geelong [VFL].

zones will destroy the game as the rich clubs with influence will steal all the best zones as happenened last time. we will be rooted again.
Reeks of the afl changing the rules just for the sake of it. Every year to make themselves relevant they feel the need to alter something. If it ain't broke don't fix it as they say and the draft ain't broke!

I think this opening sentence of yours is misleading people into thinking this is about drafting within zones as per the old VFL days.

It's not!

The AFL is floating an idea that clubs can set up their own Football Academies within a predetermined zone (to share the talent) as a way of increasing AFL Clubs interaction with local footy clubs, and luring young boys into playing AFL over other sports. This is just allowing all clubs to do what is currently being done in NSW & Qld, which has caused much anger when the Swans got Heeney for nothing.

The new bidding system for Academy players would negate any advantage a club would have in the draft if they wanted to draft players from their own Football Academy. So, in that sense, the draft wouldn't be compromised anymore than it already is.

The idea is more about development of young players, rather than drafting advantages.

I doubt very much it would be a re-instatemnet of the old zones. Not exactly. If there is some sort of criteria like the bid system that is the vogue for the Northern 4 then it certainly wouldn't allow any team to monopolise talent like they did years ago.

Lets look at it this year. Parish and Mathieson. If Geelong had rights to them , they would have to come up with the points to get them... and thats if they had rights to them. Maybe you get one player. Maybe you only get kids from R3... Its worth exploring , not to say it comes in...

The overriding concern of other sports grabbing talent shouldn't be under estimated.

It ain't broke but it's showing a few cracks they need to plaster up.

Thanks for clarifying that, BnF.
