Whats the deal with this guy, i have seen him play a couple of times before his was drafted and looked alright, haven't heard anything about him recently so i was just wondering how he is going.

I've seen Chad Gibson on 3 or 4 occasions this year and to be honest he has been very disappointing apart from one game where he was ok against Port Adelaide. In saying that I do like the look of him in that he is aggressive, hard tackler and loves the rough stuff. So he may be a very good 3 year project player.
However I think he needs to involve himself more in the game and not spectate so with a bit of luck Norwood might start playing him at centre half forward or centre half back. The game against Port he played in the ruck and did okay but at Full back he gets no where near it. His fitness definately needs to improve as well, maybe he is carrying some niggling injury
Has anyone seen him play in the past couple years? The reports in the preseason sounded promising.

Nope, pretty sure its just his fitness. :o

Chad may have a big body but he has a lot of improvement in him if he's going to make it at AFL level. His skills aren't great and his marking is about the same as well. He's got great pace and a terrific leap but I'm yet to see him fully utilise both assets.

He's a great size and that's certainly something to work with, and I absolutely love his bash'n'crash style of play. However, like Maric/Griffin he's certainly a project player and I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't debut for the AFC until late 2006/early 2007.

I still remain certain that he was very good pickup at 28. Just watch him improve as the year goes on. :)

jack thought getting a JB at pick 28 was too good to be true ;) Sounds more like a cam mooney. Eitherway i'm happy we've got a big aggressive body, but he has to be able to play footy too. Apparently JB wasnt rated extremely highly like a riewoldt when he was drafted, but he just got better and better, if we're lucky this might happen.

Wouldn’t go on AIS and draft ratings as Richmond’s Jay Shultz was rated to be a better player then Nick Riewoldt as a 16 year old. So not sure what to read into draft ratings

16 to 18 is a big difference though. As an 18 year old, Schulz wasn't half as rated much.

Excellent point. A huge amount of maturity (both physical and mental) occur during teenage years, although some would doubt the mental maturity !

Hopefully Gibson, can improve over the next 2 years and be an excellent KPP for us.

it wasnt AIS ratings, i was talking about generally at draft time. Brown wasnt a clear number 1 pick. I think he was expected to go first round, but he wasnt a riewoldt. He wasnt as developed as Gibson though, looking at pics of him. Shows what a proper weights program actually does. Gibsons problem from what i've heard, is that physically there aint alot of improvement.

Gibson is just 18 and the youngest player on our list. If he's playing regular SANFL footy at the age of 20..then that would be fine.

We all know - that generally speaking - big guys take longer to develop and we all know that Chad is one big unit.

Sure, it would be nice to see him playing better, but, let's lay off the kid for the time being.

I agree SYD. However, if they haven't played at least a few AFL
games by the time they hit 21 then chances are they probably wont play too many, ala Smith and Kruger.

speak of this somewhat fictious character he actually trained with the main group including all the physical stuff tonight, only 3 who did some form of training werent in that group, they were Scott Stevens, Matty Clarke and Kris Massie

Same thing was said about Pavlich and influenced the AFC's thinking on taking McGregor instead of Pavlich.

Enough said

Exactly.

That gives him 2 years of SANFL footy to improve his football skills/smarts, body use etc etc, which should be enough.

Am I correct in thinking Chad Gibson was a regular in the Norwood senior side last year?

After a gruelling AFL pre season it is not out of the question for his body to be adjusting to the rigours of AFL training and the expectations that any drafted player will get from the coaching staff and the football community

I can only go by intensive training of other sports for a personal example, the first six months stepping up from a junior training regiment to a senior one will and does take it out of you both mentally and physically.

If he is still playing in the Magoos this time next season, then questions have to be asked about his development, mental side of the game as well as if he was the correct player to be drafted.

Chad Wasn't regular in the seniors last year. From memory he only played a couple of league games last year.

I think you migh tbe thinking of Heath Grundy as he was a regular in the seniors.

he looked good in the reserves game against us on the weekend, he is very strong, hopefully he continues because he will be playing league soon, IMHO.

You’re right as usual Stiffy :)

There is no point in getting to stressed out about Chad Gibson only playing in the SANFL magoos. Since he wasn’t a regular last season it hasn’t given any poster any ammunition to bag him for going backwards, give the lad some time and let him develop.

I would like to see him pushing for a few Wizard cup games next season and the playing some solid SANFL senior football before hopefully getting 3 or 4 games in the second half of the season.

Hopefully he is given an opportunity soon, considering Norwood’s form is dreadful ATM.

He is a youngster and i think he is one of those guys who has heaps of talent but he could make it or he might not make it. HE is a punt but has VERY VERY big upside to him. I think he'll take at least 3 years to debut maybe late next year depending on his improvement but he will be a project player. He needs to improve on some aspects of the game.

I think sometimes people think that if a player is drafted to the AFL list he must be a walk up start to SANFL/VFL seniors and that cannot be further from the truth.

Quite simply, when picking up these guys clubs are looking 3-5 years down the track and if they do anything before hand its a big bonus.

People who have been on this board for a while will know that I am a big fan of Will Minson from the WB but as physically developed as he was when he got drafted (He was and still is a man mountain) he spend his first year in VFL reserves and even at that level he hasn't set the world on fire. Fast forward to 2005 and he is a round 7 Rising Star nomination.

Patience my fellow crows supporters. Patience ;)

I agree patience is the key. People are already writing Watts off when this is only his second year..

Word is: Chad Gibson will not be the next Jonathan Brown. He will be better. He will play CHF/FF and average 12 marks and 6.25 goals a game.
