Who should come in and who should get dropped?

I noticed that Steve Waugh said the batting needed to improve and yet bowlers were the ones dropped for todays match.

Mark Waugh has had it and Steve Waugh is close. Try a few other people, Lehmann for a start and maybe an Elliot or a Hussey.

We may as well look for new talent now cause our finals hopes are screwed.

I don't think Mark Waugh's place is dependant on any NSW-bias as the whinging Victorian cricket public seem to think. It has more to do with the fact that his brother is the captain. He scratched and prodded his way to 21 today, so that's probably considered a return to form for him. Get rid of them both!

Speaking of Captain Red Ink, his captaincy has been very ordinary in the last few games. Today he gave his most expensive bowlers the most overs while not using Andy Bichel for his full 10, and tried to justify his place in the side by trying to prove himself as a bowler.

Who would you rather bowl - Bichel or Captain Red Ink?

Unfortunately, if Michael Bevan gets Australia over the line again, the Waughs' places won't be scrutinised as closely as they should be.

Went off a little prematurely didn't you Visro. Some statements have a habit of coming back and biting you on the ass. Don't blame you though, I agreed, just didn't put it in writing. ;)

They don't come back and bite me on the arse at all. Mark Waugh got out cheaply again and looked all out of sorts and S Waugh wasn't much better. The win tonight was a miracle, it won't always be like that. We could have easily got out for less than 150. Changes need to be made to the top of the order cause they are failing bad and the team desperately needs some new blood.

How quickly the Victorian public forgets the deeds of M. Waugh over the last twelve months. ODI average of 80. So he's had a few bad games....he'll come back because he has CLASS. He looked OK last night, the ball he hit almost went over the fence.

Although I agree with you Darky that S. Waugh bowling for so long was a strange move. One or two overs to mix it up, good idea....six overs, bad idea....

Jub, It's amusing that you want to drop M. Waugh for not performing, yet you want to promote Ponting who hasn't been in the best form either in the last few games....

Lahmann's performances have been noted and he is going on tour to South Africa. Siddons.....please. Deano was unlucky, but then again I guess that's what happens when you start shagging selectors wives....:p

In amongst all the Waugh-bashing, one bloke is being forgotten. Adam Gilchrist is having a bad series as well and he is the one the whole batting plan revolves around. It's simple, if Gilly fires, Australia generally wins. The Kiwi's have sorted him out a bit by cramping him, but I don't hear anyone calling for his head. (and no, I'm not saying drop him, either)

Gilchrist
5 innings, 66 runs, BF 59, Avg 13.20, SR 111.86, HS 23
M. Waugh
6 innings, 1 no, 92 runs, BF 143, Avg 18.40, SR 64.33, HS 55*
S. Waugh
6 innings, 1no, 145 runs, BF 219, Avg 29.00, SR 66.21, HS 62
Ponting
7 innings, 228 runs, BF 297, Avg 32.57, SR 76.76, HS 80

Gilly's figures are a bit deceptive because he missed a game and didn't bat in another, but it still isn't up to his usual standard.
I agree about Mark Waugh, his confidence and his footwork are shot. I know you won't agree, Briedis, but he's had more than enough chances to get his form back and he hasn't looked like it.

I'd bring Ryan Campbell in for M. Waugh, give him another shot, he didn't do anything wrong with his chance. Steve Waugh can (and does) still contribute and should stay. Ponting's only missed out in the last 2 games, he's been easily the best of the top order.

wasn't it the coach's daughter?

Gilchrist has been out of form but he's way to important as the wicket keeper. He more than makes up for his lack of form in that area.

Mark Waugh however, is replacable, hes had 6 chances to prove himself and apart from the 50 he got against SA, hes done nothing

But after getting 20 odd runs last night, he'll be retained since he'll be considered to be "back in form"

the hardest thing in life weather it be on the sportsfield or work is knowing and coming to terms that your time is up!
while i dont blame both mark and steve that their desire is to have one more tilt at the world cup and with the added bonus the money they are on hell id even try and play on until i was shown the door.
the writing is on the wall for both and while they have served our country well its time to move on fella,s after all we dont want a repeat of the sad bad old days post marsh, lillee, chappell etc.
cheers!

In another thread you said that a side should be picked on players who consistenly perform at the highest level.
When has Mark Waugh been consistent this summer... he's been consistently awful, does that count?

Why should your record from the past year count when being picked for team? In footy, if you are out of form, you will soon end up in the two's if you don't recapture that form. Why should cricket be any different? He's had to many chances and not taken them, how long are we going to wait?

Steve could make it there in tests, but he has to give away the one dayers quick, its selfish of him for wanting to be apart of another world cup win.

I can't believe that Damian Martyn hasn't been mentioned as a player who should be axed for the one dayers.

Stephen Fleming, when he comes out to bat, changes his field with a stong emphasis on the off-side, and his bowlers bowl accordingly, he's done this throughout the series and the idiot hasn't changed his game plan at all, he must have been caught three times out on the off-side when playing New Zealand.

The Waugh brothers don't deserve thier places in the team (maybe that's why Steve had a bowl last night), they have prodded and struggled for runs this whole summer.

Ricky Ponting DOES NOT have the temprament to bat at number three, this position needs controlled aggresion (like Jacqes Kallis or Nathan Astle) not going out all guns blazing and stupidly throwing your wicket away.

Adam Gilchrist need's a rest, he seems tired, and is batting poorly compared to form of previous years.

WE NEED Ryan Campbell, (to either replace Gilchrist, or Ponting), Darren Lehmann (jesus, who does he have to root to get in the team, I wonder ?), he can replace S.Waugh, Shane Watson should get the nod ahead of Symonds and Harvey, because he's ready for Australian selection and we need a genuine all-rounder, and Matthew Elliott, should replace M.Waugh, I know that there's a few of you here who don' think much of him as a one-day batsman, but his stats from the ING Cup THIS SEASON SPEAKS FOR ITSELF.

Sadly, because of Bevan saving our arse, the selectors will continue with the same arse clowns in the top order, and if they do (which is becoming more likely by the day), well then WE DESERVE TO GET OUR ARSES KICKED IN THE FINALS, AND IN THE WORLD CUP.
