I brought a new pc 6 mths ago and it already had vista installed onto it, and am not overly impressed with Vista, specifically contant pop ups asking “do you have authority” when try and run something or the fact that some of my older games are very unstable on it. So I am looking to go back to XP, now if i choose to do this do I have to reformat and whole PC of can I just stick the XP disk in, install, and it will override vista and all my files and programs will remain as is????

If you're going to install a new OS:
1) backup your files
2) download all the XP drivers for your components to another hard drive
3) re-format the hard drive you want to install the OS on
4) do a clean install from an XP boot disc
5) install the XP drivers you downloaded

But why bother with an OS that's 8 years old and about to each end of life support? My advice would be to try the new Windows 7 Beta. It's good.
Windows 7 = Vista put back in the oven to finish baking.

This simplest way is just going to User Accounts in the control panel and turning UAC off.

After you reboot your system though, you will get that red X at the bottom right with a balloon that keeps popping up. To disable that, go to Windows Security Centre and click on “Change the Way Security Center Alerts Me” on the left then click that you don't want to be notified of any security issues without icons.

I would advise against all this though.

I know there are leaks on torrent sites but when is it officially released?
