“Struth, there’s no footy on television today, what the hell am I gonna do?”

Relax mere man, you don’t have to talk to the missus just yet, or even fix up that rotary washing line or whatever other meaningless task you’ve been putting off during the football season – there is an answer to the enforced cold turkey mid-season break from the AFL this weekend.
It’s called grassroots football.
You might have heard about it when last week when the AFL talked about it being ‘Grassroots Football Week’ and maybe even seen your favourite player parading in a strange Guernsey.
They weren’t talking about the grassroots at Telstradome, but something a bit nearer at home to you. In fact it’s almost in your own backyard.
Just around the corner from you, there are forty odd blokes sweating it out on a real football ground. There may even be some mud there.
Check it out.
South Australian and West Australian league clubs also take a break to contest state match in Perth on Saturday.
By programming this match on the same weekend as the AFL’s mid-season break, the leagues may have forfeited a huge crowd surge at its games, but hopefully that will work in favour of suburban and country football competitions across the state.
This week the Riverland Football League has had the foresight to program matches between traditional rivals across the region.
At Loxton, the Tigers take on inter-town enemies Loxton North, while Barmera-Monash hosts bitter opponents Berri. Match of the round, although arguably so, is the contest between Waikerie and Renmark – always a fiery encounter.
Known to fight tooth and nail at every conceivable opportunity, officials of Loxton’s two senior clubs have joined forces to urge local people to attend this weekend’s big match.
Loxton will be looking to avenge its loss to the Panthers in their last meeting on a weekend which will also see the club’s legendary 1953 A and B grade sides feted with a reunion.
Loxton president Col Edwards predicts the match will be a blockbuster.
“The club is really hoping that people who might normally watch the footy at home will get out there and enjoy the day and see some good local footballers in action,” he said.
“We want to see the stand packed and the cars parked right around the oval.”
Edwards said the AFL break could not have been timed better for RFL football.
“With the game here and the other matches between rivals, the RFL should expect some bumper crowds this week,” Edwards said.
Doug Spanos, president of Loxton North, agreed with his cross-town counterpart.
“This is a great opportunity for people to get out and watch a great game,” Spanos said.
“The two clubs have put on some exciting matches and recent times and we want everyone there to make a noise.”
The A grade contest kicks off at 2.40pm with reserves, senior colts, under 15s and under 13s all played prior to the big derby.
