China officially postponed

First race date moved from November to June 2005

Andrew Clarke

AVESCO Chairman Tony Cochrane has this morning officially announced the postponement of the V8 Supercars race in China. Chochrane said concerns over logistics following the F1 race there in September meant it was better to postpone today than do it in a few months time.

The replacement round is yet to be announced, but he said three circuits (2 in Australia and one in New Zealand) had put in bids for the race which will be held on November 12-14. Phillip Island is in the running, but was by no means certain.

"Round 12 will be replaced on exactly the same date... we will race on November 12-14 and we will race in Australia or New Zealand," Cochrane said at Eastern Creek this morning.

"We are talking to three venues, the deal is not done with Phillip Island, Wayne (Cattach) has had meetings with them but it is not across the line yet.

"We have made the pragmatic decision to postpone our visit to China which remains a very important market for us. We are very committed to China and we are very committed to going to China.

"I am very comfortable sitting here now that we have the right promotor for China, we now have substantial money in the bank and we will race there on June 3-5 in 2005.

"The decision not to go this year is not related to the original promotors, we made a mistake trusting people who didn't have things in place. The original promotor is an ongoing issue that we will deal with legally if and when we have to."

Cochrane said the board will meet on Tuesday to decide on the venue for the new round 12, and that an announcement could be expected within a month.

3 tracks in the running? Phillip Island, and where else would they say?
