Ok, now that Daniher will be leaving and a new coach will be coming in, we can speculate until the cows come home as to who it will be, however, that doesnt really matter.

It is obvious our list needs culling. Who should go and why.

I'll start by saying we should now be looking to offload Brad Green.

Why??

1. He is too inconsistent. He will pull a 30 possession game out about 3-4 times a season, but not do much in the rest of the games. Somebody with his talent should be getting a minimum of 25 touches a game;
2. Melbourne have no real champions amongst them, but have way too many players in the next band. Getting rid of Green starts that cull;
3. With plenty of football left in him, he is still worth something on the open market;

Trading somebody like Yze would be pointless now as he would be worth nothing in the open market. If you were going to get rid of Yze, it would have been 3 seasons ago.

So who do you think is on the chopping block and why?

Travis Johnstone

Pretty well known stuff here... inconsistent, goes missing, can be lazy at times & were unlikely to see the best of him. I'd cull him because i think he would benefit some1 like a Carlton he has the skills and pose to still give value some where else..

We should start by sacking the likes of Holland, Carroll, Ward, Picket, Godfrey, and Jamar also. All just taking up space on our list.

Not sure we should get rid of Green unless it is a top ten pick... or Travis Johnstone either.

They might fire up under a new coach and a new game plan.

Whatever, just boot Holland and Carroll out of the team. Both are crap.

A top ten pick for Travis or Green you cant be serious those two guys dont perform well when it matters. Its not the coaches fault you guys are doing so bad its the players and the injurys you got,but hey i cant talk were(Swans) are pretty average ATM.I reckon you guys could end up with Voss, even tho i dont reckon he is ready for as senior job just yet.

Both are quality players - both can turn matches - both are prolific in getting possessions. Green's game a few weeks back with 35 odd touches puts his value well up.

There is no point swapping them off for shit.

How about trading Green or Johnstone and a 1st round draft pick for Judd?

Trade Carroll? He mightn't be great but he's the best full-back option we have at the moment. If we found someone of say Holland's size and Rivers's skill, we could put him at FB and leave Carroll, Frawley and Rivers to take the other talls.

there's no way we would get a top ten pick for Green. Top ten picks are so valuable these days. Johnston could possibly attract a highish pick(9-18 or so) but nothing super high up. Green wouldn't attract anything higher than 25-30. I think we should keep them both anyway. Trav is a gun.

there's plenty of players fighting for their place next year:

Clint BIZZELL
Ben HOLLAND
Brad MILLER
Daniel WARD
Nathan BROWN
Simon GODFREY
Byron PICKETT
Mark JAMAR
Nathan CARROLL

all these guys are out of contract after this season.

Why? carroll obviosly can't play the position. He is hopless. We should trade for a good fullback. If Carrol is the only solution, we are f'ed

Who do you want to trade for? Glass?Barry?

Carrol had a good year last year but has struggled this year, as has the whole team, as mentioned above, fullbacks always look crap in a struggling side.

by the sound of most of these posts (on this thread and others) we are willing to trade half our squad, are we really in that much trouble?

Whilst Carroll is fairly average in a good side he can play pretty decently. If we traded for a good full back I wouldn't mind seeing him leave but good full backs are hard to get and I don't see us getting one. So until Frawley or any other kid is ready (Garland, Dunn and/or Miller have to become backmen, Newton and Bate look the forwards of the future) I'd rather keep Carroll and show the door to Holland and Ferguson. Otherwise we would have a Zac Dawson situation which doesn't help anyone.

Granted, Green and TJ can go missing, but maybe a new coach will bring about more consistency under a new game plan? People here say trading them might backfire when they play under a new coach, but that's exactly what we are doing now - getting a new coach! I'd cull far more players before I offloaded those two. Give them at least a year under the new coach to see how they perform and go from there.

Carroll isn't the greatest of full-backs but it would be very hard to trade him and/or get a new full back. If we were to develop a youth policy i wouldn't wanna trade for some old guy either. Travis and Green don't bring enough to the table for me and i'd like to see them shopped around. If we can't get anything worthwhile then no.

Posted this on a thread on the main board, but thought i get some ideas here

My ideas

Retire

Brown - great servant but will realise his time is up

Delist

Warnock - not up to AFL level
Neville - hardly gets a game in the Sandy 1sts
Ward - tough one but plenty of youngsters play the similar role
One of Holland/Bizzell - cant get rid of both, need one for backline depth
Pickett - love him but is past his best, might as well open a spot up for another youngster

Trade Bait

Bruce - not damaging enough, would get a good pick for him
Green - if not Bruce, look to trade Green, would get an alright pick forhim, won't trade both
Jamar - PJ has overtaken him, see what we can get, ruckmen traditionally have higher value, eg pick 12 for Jolly a few years back, if we do trade him promote neaves off the rookie list

Rookies

Promote

Neaves - good young developing ruckmen, give him Jamar's spot if traded

Keep

Hayes - some off field indiscretions but good talent and worth perservering with

Cut

Hughes - not up to AFL standards
Bode - see above

On the Cusp - possible trade bait/delisting (should all stay IMO)

Ferguson - has struggled wit injuries, worth a spot for depth
Godfrey - tries his guts out every game, much maligned but should be rewarded for a great year
Chris Johnson - young back flanker, should stay but needs to show improvement
Miller - still young, needs to improve kicking, but should definitely stay
Wheatley - has played well of late, should be given another year
Yze - his best is still very good, great servant and shouldnt be let go yet

Definites to stay

Bartram - good young defender, was brilliant last year but struck down by injury this year
Bate - great hands, future star, 10 year player, pace is an issue but makes up for it with smarts
Bell - developed into a great defender, can play small or tall, one of the best spoilers going around, great closing speed, warranting his number 15 overall pick a few years back
Buckley - actually played with him in Juniors so might be a bit biased, but has good pace and skills, named an emergency a lot this year, should be given a crack i the second half of the season and could show something
Carroll - becoming much maligned but at this stage he is the best FB option we have, cant delist him
Davey - obviously a game breaker, should be around for a while yet
Dunn - still developing, great set of hands, will be key to our future forward line
Frawley - showed good signs, when he adds some bulk will really be a good player, good pace, alright skills, future looks bright
Garland - developing KPP, had one game, looks a good sort
Paul Johnson - improved a lot this year, very athletic, great skills, excited about what he can offer
Johnstone - has been struggling with niggling injuries all year, at best he is very damaging, we need his class to complement some grunt we now have
Jones - love this guy, tough as nuts, 10 year player
McDonald - been a great servant and like a fine wine has only got better with age, will be around for at least another year
McLean - could well be captain next year with a new coach, future star of the comp
Moloney - OP has crucified him last two years, if he can get out on the park will be crucial to an 08 revival
Newton - been dominating at Sandy, should get his oppotunity sooner rather then later, a future FF prospect
Neitz - what a servant he has been, still a damaging player on the lead, 08 could be his swansong
Petterd - has shown great signs this year, hard running, courageous flanker who may move into the middle eventually, great pickup
Rivers - courageous as they come, need him back on the field to provide stability down back, provides leadersip beond his years
Robertson - stalwart of the club, is needed next year to provide leadership and should finish his career as a one club player
Sylvia - after overcoming injury has shown signs as to why he was rated higher then Brock in the draft a few year back, tough, strong hands, been handy up forward but should move into the middle next year and could turn into a very good AFL player
Weetra - yet to do much but should be given another year at least, project player
Whelan - provides leadership down back, have missed his presence this year, needed next year
White - trade bait has been mentioned but we cannot rely on Jamar or PJ to be the number 1 ruck next year, would send us further back IMO, should play at least another 2 or 3 years in red and blue

Draft

If we could perhaps get a first rounder for Bruce and a third rounder for Jamar, we should be set up nicely in the draft, based on my delistings, trades and promotion of neaves we would have 7 spots open on the list, personally i would not want any opposition players unless we could make a serious play for an elite player either via trade or the PSD

Our draft picks could be something like this (assuming we struggle for rest of the year and finish with less then 5 wins)
1
around 10 (for Bruce)
17
19
35
around 42 (for Jamar)
51

If we could have that sort of situation it would set us up reasonably well for the future, in the draft we should target these types of players:
A ruckmen, Kreuzer if we do finish bottom
A class outside midfielder, we have the inside grnt with Sylvia, McLean, Moloney, McDonald, a finisher would be nice
A couple of KPP prospects, one up forward and one down back
And then BPA

Thoughts?

Personally.

I would like the new coach put an end to all this bullshit about Davey and Green in the midfield. Definatly should be played in the forward line.

Jamar should be traded, we will get something good for him.

Ferguson should be shopped around again. unfortunatly i think we have missed the window.

Miller should be offloaded too. still think we could get something good for him.

Trav's gotta go. Too comfortable, lazy, bobs in and out of games. Green I think should be kept as a fwd.

Bruce - could go either way. I'd like him to do more, but not sure what he'd be worth on the trade market.

Miller & Jamar for obvious reasons
