What do you guys think about the future of Chris Bryan?

He took the spot in our starting 22 from Wood mid year and we have persisted with him since. He has been up and down since then; sometimes being decent and sometimes being woeful.

This is the second year in a row he has hurt us on the big stage. Last year vs. Geelong when he was run down by Joel Corey and this year missing a 25m set shot to give us back the momentum and put us back into the game.

Maybe he is still tainted by wearing the Blues jumper, that would be a hard thing for anyone to get past. :D

So the question is where to for Chris next year? My opinion is that we should invest as much time into Wood as possible as a proper tap ruckman will be crucial in 09'; especially if we get Benny C into our midfield next year.

Wood must have done something wrong to not get picked over him in the last 5 or 6 games. We have to give Wood as many games as we can, and I thought he actually played a lot better than Bryan did. He lacks accountability and intensity, but Bryan's apparent physical presence is very, very overrated. We know what we're going to get with Bryan, he cannot (or is not willing to push himself) improve. He is lazy, incredibly dumb, and makes bad errors. Keep him on the list as injury insurance unless we get another ruckman in the PSD or through trade, but I hope that he's played his last game for the Collingwood seniors.

yes, I think we can all agree just because you are 6'6" and once in a blue moon you can kick a ball 70 metres, that you are not necessarily a ruckman, AFL standard.

Does this sum up Bryan? Being able to get both feet off the ground at a ruck contest I think should be a prerequisite. They call that jumping in some cultures.

I'm just having a hard time understanding why he's being played. He has a few redeeming features, in that he's big bodied, can take a good mark and can occasionally kick a good goal. However, he is a terrible tap ruckman, has terrible decision making abilities, is very slow to respond to situations, does not run all that hard, often shanks kicks or just doesn't look to where he's kicking it, etc. He's basically just a really dumb footballer who struggles to read the play and make the right choices, and that's the kind of player who is always going to be a liability to a team.

I always had my concerns over him, especially given he was delisted by Carlton at a time when they were absolute crap. Maybe the club noticed a few of his qualities and thought they could turn him into a better footballer (and to be fair he's probably improved since coming from the Blues) but overall I think they've failed to fix up his flaws and ultimately I believe he's just not worth persisting with.

The only reasoning I can think of as to why the Pies would play him ahead of Wood is that they don't want the younger ruckman to have too big a workload just yet. It's a well known fact that ruckmen take longer to develop than regular players, and we were criticised a fair bit back in the day for giving Josh such a big role at such an early age, so maybe we're just taking it one step at a time with Wood and ensuring that we don't hamper his development.

Complete SPUD. In the adelaide final his super coach points were - 30 at one point.

Why do we always persist with plonker back ups. Steve McKee, Guy Richards and this corkie.

Wood is still young, but it must be alarming is Bryan is a better selection.

It's almost like the ultimate insult, to have him selected before you

Tell you what tho, I am building a brick wall in a few weeks and I have a photo of Bryan to show the Brickie. I want this wall to be immovable and do nothing.

Don't know about anyone else but when he was lining up that shot for goal I just knew he was going to stuff it up.

Above posters are right - we need to put a big pre-season into Wood and get him as much game time as possible next year. I don't know about delisting Bryan - depends if we could pick someone up in a trade. Not sure if White or Lade are the answer either although I would probably take White over Bryan at this point.

I'd take a crippled pygmy over Bryan at this stage

Let Him Go - Try Someone Else

I think Bryan is ordinary, but unless we get a readymade ruckman to replace him, I'd expect him to get another year.
Yeah, he's in a position of strength, even if it means playing twos all year.

He was better this year than I imagined, not great but servicable. We only have 3 ruckman on our list and only 1 who is established.

Unless a ready made replacement is found dont think we can let him go yet. Ready made ruckmen are scarce via the trade so I expect him to be there next year otherwise we are too exposed to injury/form probs with Fraser / Wood

PS Fraser cannot be traded ever in our current ruck climate

ready made? why do we need a ready made ruckman in a developing midfield?

we need fraser/wood to play every game in 09 together. and delist bryan at once. wood can go forward and take a strong mark and kick a goal. he moves betetr around the ground and is a fancied young ruckman.

If we can pick up jeff white for nothing, i'd be all for it. he would help the development of wood, who we should look at as our future ruckman. after all we did use our pick 16 to get him did we not?

Bryan was good for 3 games after Wood was dropped, but as has been his trait his whole career cannot maintain any form once he gets an extended run, pity because he has the attributes to be a decent footballer but decision making is awful and for me has to go.
Jeff White got stale at melbourne and at 30 or 31 would be a handy pick up if we could get him for nothing.

ready made? why do we need a ready made ruckman in a developing midfield?

Simple. Because if Fraser and/or Wood get injured we need a ruckman who is physically robust enough to step straight into senior football. It would be a disaster if we had to play Thoolen or Keeffe, both kids, when they're in no way physically ready for it.

Well yeah, but you can't guarantee that both Fraser and Wood will be injury free next year, can you? Therefore, you need a third ruckman physically capable of playing senior football and not getting smashed into little pieces by much bigger, stronger, and older opponents.

Did you even read my post? I said we shouldn't delist Bryan unless we can replace him with a readymade ruck, ie someone like Jeff White.
