Im going out on a limb here and predicting he'll come out and have a decent 2018. Kick his 25-30 goals and be a serviceable forward for the Pies. I think he'll come out and prove his doubters wrong.

There are obviously gonna be those who'll assume he'll be running around in some bush league after his delisting too.

What do you think he'll offer up in 2018? Will he still be on the list?

I hope you do prove us wrong Chris. But can you do us a favor and instead of waiting till next year, show us something this year.

Hopefully his k was significantly frontloaded and only costing the club $200k pa for the next couple of years

If he were 24, I might hold out some hope, but not at his current age and form over the past 4 seasons. The best we could hope is a solid VFL footballer who is a 'break glass in case of emergency' style selection at AFL level. But as it stands, he isn't even really doing enough to justify a spot in the VFL, so there would be many others I would pick in the AFL ahead of him.

Realistically, the club needs to manage his exit.

I console myself in his selection on the basis that we must have front loaded his contract. I really hope we weren't crazy enough to have his contract continue at a high rate towards the end of the 4 year deal when he is in his early 30s. Part of me thinks we also did Freo a favour to enable them a 2nd round pick on the basis that we upped the length of his deal and front ended the contract. Perhaps they will repay us the favour in the future (these sort of arrangements can happen at the trade table...sort of buying some credit).

If we were at least smart enough to front end the contract, we can hopefully manage his exit with more ease. Realistically, we need to find a way to delist him at the end of this year. Otherwise, we will be forced to delist a younger player like Sier, or make a call on Keeffe.

Did you predict the same thing for 2017 when we recruited him last year?

He's cooked. Won't get games ahead of Elliott or Fasolo, Kirby will overtake him provided he behaves himself over the offseason, and Daicos will likely take a forward flank in 2018 too.

Fasolo Moore Daicos
Kirby Reid Elliott

WHE rotating on a forward flank too. Crocker as depth.

Get rid of Mayne, he's cooked. Even his forward pressure is non existent anymore. He's not going to get any better being another year older. He's fools gold, much like Cloke was last year.

Serious question but what has given you any impression that he'll do this?
I'm thinking you've created this thread on the off chance it does happen (won't happen) and the plan is to bump it so you look like Nostradamus (won't happen).

Pressure's mounting...
Melbourne great David Schwarz has slammed Collingwood’s recruiting of former Docker Chris Mayne, saying the person who signed off on the deal should never work in footy again.

Mayne is in the first year of a four year deal with the Magpies, reportedly worth $500,000 a season.

He was dropped by the Magpies after Round 3 and hasn’t been seen in the senior side since.

Despite Mayne still having another three years left on his deal, Schwarz said the two parties must part ways at the end of the season.

“If I’m Collingwood, I go to Mayne and his manager and say, let’s cut a deal,” Schwarz said on SEN 1116.

“We have you for four years, (we’ve) got to pay you two million dollars, we have already paid you 500 thousand. We will pay you 650 thousand now to pack your bags and go home.

“You’re going be playing in the reserves. It’s your choice. Even if we pay you a million, we wipe you and move on.”

Schwarz believes keeping Mayne will impact the development of young players on the Collingwood list.

“It isn’t even about the money, you can always afford it and there is room in the cap,” he said.

“It stifles the development of the list when you have a list clogger like Chris Mayne. The person who did the deal, hang your head in shame. They should never work in the AFL again.

“Chris Mayne hasn’t given a yelp.”

What do we do about Mayne in 2018 though?
Can we convince him to retire?
Does he suddenly go missing?

Neitz has been reading BigFooty, plenty of people here (including me) have been asking if it's possible to just pay him out and delist.

Not sure what the point of this would be though.

We'd still need to pay his contract out so you're still forking the money out of your cap. Might as well keep him as depth anyway. I refuse to accept that he's completely useless when we've been more than happy to play Blair and Crocker in the seniors at various stages.

He's completely and utterly useless... Believe it.

Somebody can explain to me if I'm due $2 million why would I go away for $1m?
That makes no sense to me.

Sure I'll go, but give the full cheque now.

See you till then

Haha, I think we're all clinging to this. Hoping he is part of some master plan to get us to the minimum TPP in the short term to enable us to lure a big name or two.

But I just can't see it.

Special can't believe I'm agreeing with you.
If we're paying him anyway may as well be depth. He's better then say Blair so he's not the least of our list.

Nice enough fellow so can't see him being a bad influence on the list. He can do a Caff role in the VFL or be emergency depth. We're paying so why pay for nothing at all?

There's almost no chance that Mayne or his management would agree to a deal at the end of just one year.

I've thought all along that the end of 2018 was when we might be able to strike a deal, and figure out a pay out that suits both parties.

He's not even having an impact at VFL level, mainly due to a lack of trying it seems, but Neitz is right when he says he is and will get in the way of developing youngsters.

Three options for next season;

1. Make him VFL captain. Seriously. Give him some responsibility and make him part of the team setup down there.

2. Make him part of the VFL coaching group. Same as option one. He's not playing senior footy again, so we have to find a way for him to contribute down there next year.

3. He runs, well more like jogs around for another VFL season getting in the way of a kid who could be developing in his place.
