Just bought this the other day, had a couple of games and ready to throw it out! :(

This is either way too hard or just plain boring and this is coming from a Civ junkie!

What am I missing?

I haven't been able to find it the new one anywhere, really wanna get it.

Did you play the old Colonization? It's not really hard (can't comment on the new one), but requires a massive amount of micromanagement. I find in Civ games you can generally let your cities assign the population to the right tiles automatically and you just choose what they build, however in Colonization you have to manually assign everything. The other key difference is there isn't a shared inventory of goods, you have to transport stuff around often. Make sure you use trade routes.

Basically liberty bells are your "science", get Thomas Jefferson in your congress asap to increase the production of it by 50%.
Crosses grant colonists joining you on the docks for free, so get the dude that increases that by 50%.
Lost City rumours are essentially the "villages/tribes" from the Civ games, usually grant free stuff (Fountain of Youth is the best) or can do bad stuff. Get Hernando de Soto asap (he makes all rumours produce positive results).
Stick missionaries in all the native villages near you, it slows the speed in which they get pissed off with you and can give indian converts to your colonies (they are really good at farming, fishing, lumberjacking etc - all the outdoor stuff).
Get privateers and go pirate the other countries ships :D fun stuff there.
Oh also it took me awhile to figure this out, you have to equip tools to a colonist to send him off to plow and build roads. They run out very quickly so you need to set up a colony to mine ore and build tools asap so you can distribute them out as needed, because unless you choose The Netherlands as your country, the price gets too high too quickly if you buy tools in Europe often.

Good luck with it.

Now you're making it sound like fun but this was so much harder to play then the old Col.

Just got it last night, its very different from the old one. I'm finding it harder to expand and settle now colonies in this one. Also the King is a pain in the butt, constantly asks for gold, between 20-1700 every 10 turns or so.

I don't mind it so far, when I get a chance I'll set it to Marathon speed and do a proper game.

Also did you work out how to raise your Military points? All others are increasing for me except that.
