This guy can find the ball, big body, big kick. Unorthodox kicking but hits targets. I would love to elevate him to the seniors list,I reckon he can take the next step. I was also impressed with Spurr, should also go up. I think they are already a better proposition then Van Berlo,Faulks,Mayne, even Crowley,
to name a few.

With clanceeee i dont know how he got the nickname clanger other than it being close to his name.

He has always been a pretty good kick.
His problem is its such a low kick trajectory that he is extremely easy to smother and can be intercepted easier.
Never seen a player with so many of his kicks being smothered like Clanceeeeee.

Haven't seen any smothered yet this preseason, maybe hes worked on it.
In the past though it was way too often.

Yep Clancee is probably ahead of them now.

But its still just squad depth as he is not best 22. So if he's playing it's due to injuries. If a LTI then he's elevated, if not a LTI then he's only getting a few games anyway. A consistent year then could be elevated accordingly at year end...

Early last year I was a fan because of his kicking. But that part of his game turned to shit during the season, and he wasn't good enough in other areas to compensate for it. But I still think he's got a great natural kicking style and has the ability to send off those bullet passes that can hit targets.

Looks like a complete douche with the sleeve tat though. Couldn't imagine this guy getting anything like that.

I thought that we get a nominated rookie spot since Grover is on the veterans list ?

I don't think the veterans list exists anymore. I believe there are still TPP exemptions for veterans, but they don't need to be on a separate list. This is just what i've read in news reports though, I tried looking for it in the 2012 CBA, but couldn't find a copy of it.

I would of thought that the main reason Clancee gets smothered a lot is because he takes a long time to drop the ball. In fact once he picks his target, he spends a bit of time to look down at his foot, drop the ball, kick it. Hence giving opponents plenty of time to smother. The only knock on him really.

I thought that he had a very good game and moved well ahead of other players vying for that position. Great to know that his hard work during the pre season pays dividends on the field. A credit to him. Please note Michael Walters!

If one of our new rookies played a game like Pearce did on Sunday we'd be clamouring for him to be elevated and calling him the next Michael Barlow.
Because it's Clancee it's ho hum, list filler, depth, cannon fodder. . .

BigFooty 101. The unknown is way more exciting than the known.

It's interesting when you compare his career to date with MDB and JVB. More so Pearce and MDB as they were both such highly regarded juniors. They all started out on the rookie list in 2009 and all made their AFL debut in that same year.

MDB and JVB both earned an upgrade to the senior list mainly through their commitment to perform a very specific role (MDB as a defensive HF/tagger in '09 and JVB as a shut down small defender in '10). Pearce has never been given that sort of opportunity; he's a more attacking/creative player so it's not necessarily something that would've suited him anyway. As such he's kind of been left competing with every new draftee, along with all the senior players to fill out the squad/best 22 in a running/flank/midfield role. As such Pearce hasn't really found his niche and has always been fighting for his career as much as a specific position.

I always kind of wonder 'what if?' with Pearce. What if he was upgraded instead of De Boer? What if he was upgraded instead of Van Berlo?

I don't know really, I've been a fan of Pearce since we drafted him. He seems like a quality guy; he captained pretty much every junior side he ever played in. I really think he could offer something as a 'best 25' type player. He always performs in the WAFL which puts pressure on. At AFL level he generally has a moment in each game where he looks like he belongs and it's not just the tats either. He just doesn't seem to have that confidence to put it all together...

Pearce seems like the type of person that would thrive under the coaching & direction that Lyon eminates. He'd be the exact type of player to improve from the middle tier. High discipline, ball accumulator - just needs the direction & tutilage. I wouldn't be too hastey to upgrade him just yet though, even if we were able to at this stage. He might still be squeezed out come rd 1 and it'd be a waste of an upgrade pending the outcomes of other midfielders that may or may not come back come rd 1-2.

If Grover and Pavlich are still on the vet's list (I would have thought sound list management would have Grover on main list) then we wouldn't have a pre season nominated rookie spot available.

Here's a Melbourne article talking about there position..

I think once you're on the vets list you can't get off (without retiring)

Clancy has always had talent, but is just one of those players that is clearly above WAFL etc. level, but not quite AFL best 22 either - he's in between.

He's a good kick but not a super quick disposer of the ball (by hand or foot) which makes him less than ideal in tight fast AFL midfields. He can run hard, but he's not overly quick, he's solid, but he doesn't use it in your typical 'tough nut' type manner. He seems to read the play well enough, but again isn't especially elite at it. He's two short and not quite nimble enough to play back, he doesn't seem a natural tagger so can't do that role, that leaves wing (bit slow), midfield (not quite a ball winner or clearance expert) which he's serviceable but we've got better.

Having said that, I really like what I've seen in this pre-season from Clanceeeeeee. He's clearly worked hard on his fitness and conditioning and he looks a bit speeder over the ground which I think is a big plus for him. With Barlow still in the indefinite category, Mora also unlikely to have any reliable game time soon, Mundy on the slow road back too - I can easily see Pearce slotting into the team and perhaps locking himself in for the first half of the season at least if he can hold his form.

I think he's got along way to go in terms of getting consistency in his game judging by last season......but I suppose the exciting thing, is to see how far he has developed over the preseason. At present who do we think he would be most likely replace in the best 22?

Depends what you mean by that, but right now he'd be 'replacing' players like Barlow and Mora who are weeks or even months away from being able to play AFL games - the first few rounds at least would be questionable. Looks like Mundy will be questionable for the first few rounds as well. Lower is out for a couple of weeks early too.

I've not done a team list type analysis, but I could see Pearce as a regular sub at least in the first few weeks of the season. If Pearce shows form then it's up to the others to push him out I guess.

Your criticisms seem a little graspy for me. Dont know what you mean by slow by hand, I think you need to have a look at what he's handballing too, sometimes players need to delay a handball or kick. Someone said on the boards his kicking trajectory is too low so it gets intercepted or something.. what rubbish, better than too high so it gets punched, a traditional Freo flaw. He's gotta be in our top half a dozen kicks, especially over 50m. Pace is only an issue if you are particularly slow or fast, which he isn't. Only real criticisms that imo can be leveled at him are he isn't super agile and until this year dedication seemed an issue, although more so off the field than on it.

Honestly I think he isn't rated largely because he doesn't physically look like an athlete, but if you weigh him (no pun intended) on what he does, which is play inside and outside, tackle, solid mark and competitive mentality. For me, I don't think that Mora deserves a game as much as Pearce at this stage. Not going off potential, going off what they have shown. Don't underestimate the value of solid contributors.

Well considering Pearce cant get a game without an LTI being submitted to the AFL, which would prevent said player participating in AFL (or WAFL?) games for eight rounds of the H&A, who would you nominate to exclude from all game time for two months of football? Or do we still have one rookie elevation up our sleeve?
