Michael Clarke heading towards a century against redbacks. Following one against Qld last week.
Good form leading into test matches - could he replace Lehmann, due to his youth, at the front of the q when M. Waugh goes?

He could.

I, for one, would prefer to see him with more experience under his belt first.

Will play for Australia one day, it's just a matter of when.

I don't know about holding on to a player until he's more experienced. It's not like he will be thrown to the wolves with the experienced side Australia has at the moment is it.
They kept saying Lehmann needed more experience and then his chance has just never come.
The more we make players gain experience, the older I side continues to get.
Brett Lee and Gillespie would have played as much first class cricket as Clarke before he got his chance. While Slater wasn't overly experienced when he first got his shot.
Not totally disagreeing with you BMD, but just debating.

dogwatcher, i actually said this in another thread, but i spose it would be more relevant here.

if michael clarke did replace mark waugh during the ashes series, how would your full strength NSW middle order look?? you would have to pick clarke as an automatic selection over mark waugh if this was the case.

is it possible, on the back of test performances, mark waugh could bypass the state side right back to bankstown 1st grade???

What better chance to ease him into the rigours of international cricket than against the poms!

Hard to believe I know, but England are the last side to actually beat Australia in a Test match in Australia.

If England are the pits, how lousy is the rest of world cricket?

It's an interesting question - how do you fit Clarke, Bevan, Katich and Waugh x2 into a middle order? Promote one of them to opener? Promote Haddin to opener and put one of them at #7?

I think Clarke should stay in the NSW side for a little bit longer. His FC career average is still well under 40. And I'm partly biased as a Lehmann fan, a man who is long long long overdue for a spot in the Test side. I don't care if he's 32, if he was in the side we wouldn't be dropping him.

i personally think clarke has to cement a spot in the NSW side before he is a chance for a test call up. a full strength side i mean.

Clarke will be an automatic inclusion for NSW, as he'd be ahead of Slater, Mail, Phelps and Richards who have recently occupied spots at the top of the order.

Haddin could open, or Mark Waugh could open, maybe Steve Waugh will be rested a bit more to prolong his Test career.

Can the ACB give NSW a direct instruction to play Clarke, in the interests of the national side developing (as even some of the stoutest anti-NSW people concede this bloke will be of Test class)?

Too early to say he's a realistic shot at selection NOW, you don't want a Stuart MacGill/Peter Taylor/Colin Miller type of scenario where guys are in an out of the state squad, but regularly playing for Australia.

I agree with your philosophy. I just think he's not quite ready yet.
We're also not desperate yet. Steve Waugh was picked when he was 20 after 9 first class games.

Although everyone could see his class it was probably too early it's just that the OZ team sucked so much at the time.

Everyone can see Clarke's class, but there's no need to rush him at the moment.
