The discussion on the Hawkins/Brown thread about some of the classic battles between the Hawk and Dipper got me thinking how much I used to really enjoy some of those battles. You used to look forward to them with great anticipation.

What great match ups have you all enjoyed to watch over the years?

A few of mine

Dempsey v Moore - more of a wrestle than anything

Foster v Brereton - Fossie always had his measure

Foster v T.Daniher - usually a great contest of marking power

Kennedy v Lockett - I used to hate playing Saints coz Lockett always gave us and Rick a hard time no matter the score.

Kennedy v Dunstall - Kennedy was one of my faves and usually did well on Dunstall

Croft v Carey - very under rated battles. I thought they had some colossal contests in the 97-01 period.

Brian Royal and Tony McGuinness in a tag team bout against John Platten and Richard Loveridge in the mid 80's

Scott Wynd v Shaun Rehn - have to say Rehn got the better of him in some of the big games but they were titanic battles.

Libba v everyone in 1997

A Few One Offs

Zeno Tzatzaris def Robert Banks 1986. Zeno played a great tenacious game running off the key Pie forward.

Danny Delre def Alistair Lynch (Fitzroy) in 92. Ripped him apart that day kicked 7 I think. Many from one on one contests of strength.

Steve McPherson v Chris Lewis had a few mighty tussles with plenty of unsettled dust about them.

Danny Southern v Matthew Richardson - I'm sure Richo wet his pants when Southo manned him up

What about the tag team duo of Doug Hawkins and Robert Gronewegon(spelling apologies) Vs those guys on the hill at the Willy footy ground in the 80s. The dynamic duo would have done alright if they hadn`t been so pi$$ed on the day and i believe this contest probably cost them a shot at the WWF heavy weight tag team title. :D

Libba v Cousins - made him a man
Foster v Loewe - Loewe never beat him until late in Fossies career. Foster just lent on him all day.
Beasley v Rod Carter - Simon was scraed s h i t l e s s of him
Foster v Kerna - thought Kernahan was paid too manty frees and got away with ones agisnt him
Grant v Carey - happened a few times, Grant did well.

What about a one off that worked great:

Reynolds v Loewe: Crackers kept him to one mark by half time and only three for the match. A great effort, even his teammates did not think he could keep him quiet.

or

Campbell v Lockett: The gloved one kept the big boy goaless in a classic encounter at the Whitten Oval. Whilst Campbell played on him a number of times and normally did well, this one really stands out for me because Lockett got moved out to CHF.
Unfortunately for the big boy Fossie ran off him a kicked a couple of goals late in the last q.

wasn't there another game in the late 80's or early 90's where Fossie kept Lockett goal less as well? I remember Kennedy playing that game but not on Plugger.

I think that it might true but the big boy played at CHF
Fossie was nowhere near as effective whenever we tried to play him at FB

For one offs, whats about
Standfield v J Madden - the day Wynd was knocked out in the first minute!

A great example of a player being thrown into the deep end at short notice. He was still doing interviews on the radio an hour after the game

I take it Libba on anyone as a back pocket player will not get a mention here. Still in disbelief over that decision ( I could mention Rohan Smith as CHB in a preliminary final not so long ago but why torture myself)

Late in the game Gordon Fode got knocked into next week about 20 m out right in front and Lockett jumped in to take the kick. Lockett had such a bad day he missed it.

Kym Koster on Peter Matera at Subi in '94 or '95, gave Matera a hiding and we won in Perth fort he first time ever.

Ian Morrison on Michael Roach in the early '80s, Roach was in red hot form on his way to a 100 goal season but Morrison kept him kickless. Actually I dont think he got a touch all day.

The Lockett/Campbell match up was in '92

They tried to shake the tag by taking Matera to FF but Koster still went with him

Leon Cameron on Wayn"king" Carey , I think the logic was no one was going to stop Carey so there was no damage.

Zeno got 3 votes in the Brownlow at Geelong one day

Hawkins on Dipierdomenico were great clashes , remeber the 85 prelim , great tussle

Beasley was also destroyed by Malarkey regurlarly

Southern v Sumich
:D

Kritter on Ablett - held him goalless at Ablett's peak - as I remember it anyway.

Beasley on all those FB's he set records against.
:p

Quite similar to the day that R.Osborne gave R.Kennedy a bath in late '88? ;)

:p :p

Libba v. P Kelly is one classic - a TV ad for Liptons tea was even made out of it. What about Wira and Hocking (I think) - the squirrel gripping debacle...

One offs:

Does anyone remember Rohan Smith's first game in the Stirling/Fosters/Ansett cup? Bulldogs v. Hawthorn (1992?) - he lined up against Dermie. I remember a few tussles between the two.

Also when we defeated St Kilda in one of our few memorable wins of 1996, I think it was Kritter that held Loewe very well ( I don't think Stewie kicked any goals that day) . Also a memorable match for Allen Jackovich clapping and blowing kisses to the crowd after we won.

I remember that day clearly, it was at Optus and it was Grant, not Kritter.

12 marks, 25 possessions vs. Loewe 1 mark, 2 kicks, 1 goal. Loewe's only mark and goal came late in the game over Steve Wallis when Grant had to go to meet the player carrying the ball.

It was the most dominant performance from a CHB I've ever seen.

The following week we lost to Essendon by 3 pts when Kritter missed his target and Mercuri goaled with about 10 seconds left. Grant had about 25 possessions and then went forward in the last quarter and kicked a couple of goals. Hird had about the same and got the 3 votes ahead of Grant. I am convinced that if we had hung on and won that game Grant would have got the 3 and would have tied with Voss for the Brownlow instead of Hird.

When Gumboots Galimberti was carrying on about Romero being ahead in the B & F he didn't count these two games.

Darcy vs. Hudson

Darcy vs. Hudson: That is Dave vs Peter. Dave Darcy kept the great Peter Hudson goal-less for may of their clashes. It all came unstuck one match 'though when Hudson kicked a bag.

Yes, Grant - sorry.

Oh wow - I remember that Round 22 match in 96. I was at the G on the edge of my seat - I'm gettin' butterflies thinking about it now - so close. For such a crap year that match really left me on a high though. From memory there was a general consensus that had we won, Grant would've polled 3. There's also some great coverage of it in "Year of the Dogs".

I had a bet with a friend that Romero would poll over 10 in the Brownlow that year. :( :( :(

I remember one from the late 80s.

Neil Cordy vs Gary Ablett

Ablett was having an awesome season. Kicking goals from everywhere. Cords went wherever Ablett did on this particular game and restricted him to about 3 touches. Only problem was that one of them was an absoloute screamer of a pack mark in the goal square (Geelong Rd end) which got replayed over and over again all season. Still gets played every now and then - you can see Neil coming from the side next to the great-man, his fist just not quite making it as the ball nestles into Ablett's chest.

He gave Ablett a bath that day but that mark will be all that is remembered from that game!
