absolutely gutted when he passed away.

Clint would call a game that involved clubs 15th and 16th on the ladder and made it feel like the teams were battling it out for top spot. While normal commentators would bagging them and start comparing to top teams.Dwanye Russell i'm looking you.

spot on , cometti and bruce use to be great , but thye just try to out do each other with comettisms or bruce special lines. gotten old , people just want the game to be called as it is and be informative in relation to the game , not what some wrestler is doing in the wwe
Admittedly, Denis is a bit stale now but don't you love the pop culture references? It makes commentators more likeable and when not forced, is entertaining.

It's far more relateable than Robert Walls referencing a footballer from the 1970's that no one's heard of in 20 years. "Nic Natanui reminds me of young Jack Norstrom, who was there the first year I walked into Carlton. Except he's jumps higher, runs faster and has a full set of hair". Who's that aimed at? The Carlton fans who followed his career?

Best memories of Clinton were him calling games with Healy and Duck. He understood that if it was a sh*t game, viewers would know that and he wouldn't try to BS us. And if it was a good game, he would let it breathe and not say too much. He had a great sense for the theatre of sports and not trampling on the moment.

Clinton was the best, even at his young age.

Still miss him. But am so grateful that I have three grand final DVDs where I can listen him call the games as my team wins the flag.

Still the best caller I have had the pleasure to listen to bar none.

Could call any sport he wanted, with accuracy and knew how to build the tension.

His call of the gold medal match in the womans waterpolo when the aussies won in Sydney was great. The closing minutes where we won with seconds remaining was superb

Clinton was a true professional. Well prepared for every game and unbiased in his commentary. Unlike commentators such as Tim Lane and Robert Walls who mention Carlton during every game they call, Clinton always called games without bias. Even though he was a Collingwood supporter he called Jason Akermanis' winning goal in the 2002 Grand Final with genuine excitement.

Agree mate,he looked like he enjoyed calling every team unlike the rest who if it was not their team or was a smaller club they were not interested in the game.

QFT.

Always loved listening to Clinton calling us because the usual Victorian suspects are so disinterested they couldn't be bothered getting our players names right or spend half the coverage bringing up references to Richmond/Carlton/Collingwood/Essendon.

Really one of the last unbiased callers was Clinton.

Whilst everyone is reminiscing...

Some commentators believe they can fool audiences by feigning excitement or just ignoring the crapness and focusing on the 'highlights'. More than any of his colleagues, then and now, he understood that fans were becoming increasingly knowledgeable and to treat them as such. If it was a crap game, Grybas would say so and spend the fourth quarter discussing the team's future or other football issues. He really 'got it'.

Exactly. Derwayne Russell is the biggest example. He tries to manufacture excitement with his nancy-boy 'gives it some shoe' bollocks and comes off looking like a wanker. Clinton could make the game sound exciting without trying to invent sports phrases that are completely nonsensical.

Was one of my favourite commentators/journalists. WLF was probably the best AFL show at the time.

He died on my birthday. The news Didn't make the day as special as it could have been. :(

His funeral was very emotional. Full credit to FoxSports for showing it live.

Re: Clinton Grybus

It's such a pity what happened to Clinton. He was right up there with my favourite commentators Phil Liggett and Colonel Bob Sheridan. He was outstanding.
