Analysis Close losses

I think trying to link what has happened in the past with what is going to happen in the future is crazy.

Footy doesn't follow a pattern, it's too complex.

You need a lot of things to come together to become a powerful AFL team, and we only have some of those pieces at the moment.

Sure. I think that's a fair comment. We don't have all the pieces

The challenge is: what are we going to do to get them?

I think harder than that is trying to work out what the pieces are.

What makes Hawthorn so good now? Coach? Defensive Line? Training methods? Off-field camaraderie? Assistants? Medical Staff? Psychological training? Strategic planning? Drafting and Trading? A bit of each?

It's not like there is an ingredient list that you just tick off and voilà you have a premiership.

Common theme in a number of close losses is working hard to get multiple goals and get in front or get even, and then giving away a cheap/easy goal to give the momentum back. Feel it is becoming a trademark of the crows under Sanderson.

There are 3 defender options as FA. Get 1 possibly 2. Getting 2 lets us delist 2 players for free.

We need to upgrade our 2nd and 3rd round picks. Pets for pick upgrades.

New midfield and forward coaches. New fitness coach, leave Poulos as Strength and Conditioning. New snr assistant. New strategy coach, big picture stuff.

Getting the midfield functioning properly will bring the likes of Dougie and Mackay into the game more.

Tex, JJ, Cameron, Betts, Lynch, Lyons/Kerridge as the mid rotations.

We have enough for a potent fwd line. JJ is getting goals and *can* contested mark (2012) and *can* lead (2013). He needs work on his intensity, but he can improve this.

We have enough with Danger, Sloane, Crouch, Crouch & Thommo to get a midfield working especially with Jacobs. Lyons and Kerridge rotated through. VB fits in as a supporting role.

Talia and Brown with Smith is a good start. Jaensch can support this. I rate Laird as a small defender. This is where 1 or 2 FA pick ups are important.

We need a contested game plan and a spread game plan. But to spread or defend a spread we must be fit.

Hendo, Wright, Martin depth, get Kelly in the rotation. Spina and Battersby deserve another shot as rookies. Otten as an LTI leaves space for an upgrade for round 1 and we have round 11and beyond to try out another rookie

Beyond that the rest can turn over. (Have I missed anyone that MUST stay?)

It's not impossible stuff. Get it done AFC.

can i say skills coaching?
contrasting with the hawks and cats as a bench mark, we are so far behind them its not funny...
just basic skills... footy 101 stuff... the fundamentals

Would have thought that a good line coach should pick up on the skills required and get players with similar needs working on say, pin point kicking drills..... but yes a dedicated skills coach wouldn't go astray.

Naturally its all of the above. some plainly more than others, but all
Journeys start with one step at a time. We don't need to be paralysed by the length of the task, every foot step in the right direction counts

If we don't know which way is up, what the direction is, then we've got the the wrong people in charge of the map
