Coaching Hypothetical...

It has been reported than Denis Pagan indicated today that he would be leaving the Kangaroos at the end of the season. Now, in my opinion, Pagan is the best coach currently going around, continually getting more out of his players than should be possible.

Furthermore, his model of coaching was learnt by copying Tom Hafey and the Richmond power teams of the late 60's and early 70's, the irony of which is never lost on me!

The question is, do we make a play at obtaining the best coach who is now available?


(Just for a little kicker on this, Mark Brayshaw no doubt would have played football under Denis Pagan at some point and would know each other reasonably well)

to be honest here cjh if you were pagan would you prefer to take a pay cut or go to a club who has a very poor reputation when it comes to coaches in the past 20yrs?.
its about time the players take responsabilty and the club not take the easy option.

I agree that Pagan is, if not the best coach going around is in the top 3.
Spud is still unproven. Although I'm starting to have doubts.

On his request we have recruited nothing but Midfielders and crumbing type players.

We now how the shortest squad in the whole comp.

Hudson is another mistake. These mistakes are costly.

As mentioned on another post on last years efforts he probably deserves another year. But if the club decided to go after Pagan I certainly would wouldn't mind. His son plays for Coburg as well.

Yeah, you'd consider it. A top coach but I don't know. I still think we should give Spud time to work on his plan (even though I'm sure 15th wasn't exactly on his plan!).

It would be remiss of us not to give Denis a quick phone call to enquire of his intentions. I'm sure the idea of stepping into a club with a large supporter base already in place, and a couple of very early draft picks to toy with would be attractive to him.

But honestly, I think Richmond would be third in line after Sydney and Carlton for his services, even if we did decide to go back on pledge of coaching stability ....

When was the last time Richmond had a genuine, bona-fide "Supercoach"?

I'm going to discount Allan Jeans short tenure and I'm not sure about Robert Walls (although he DID coach a premiership and did some excellent, underrated work at Fitzroy and Brisbane) but I'd say the last would have to be Tommy Hafey.

I'm not calling for Spud's booting but, damnit! We need someone who can impose some leadership, discipline and vision down there. I am sick to death of travelling this road every few years of unfulfilled promises that end in heartbreak.

Let's look at the Supercoaches out there -

Sheedy - tied up for at least the next two seasons.
Parkin - I doubt if his health is up to it again (especially with Richmond!)
Blight - if the right offer came along????
Pagan - Could well be in the marketplace.
Malthouse - All Maggied up for a few years at least.
Matthews - If he returns to coaching in Victoria it will be with the Hawks.
Barassi - probably retired and no doubt behind the times.
Hafey - Well, it would a fairytale sort of ending to his story, wouldn't it? He'd love to do it, and we'd all love him to do it, but common sense says that no, it is just a dream.

So that leaves Pagan and Blight.

As has been said, it would be foolish not to check the dance card for the coming year for these guys.

If we can chat to carey, we can chat to dennis. BTW ; It'd be interesting to find out if those two would ever pair up again.

As for Spud....

Discipline :

he's proved himself there. Dropping Ottens, Richo, Daffy and Knights. He also keeps himself physically fit which is a good sign.
Healy said Spud can get sucked into barracking in the box...and Crocker is assigned to keep him focused. Also It'd be easier if he learned to keep some of his thoughts away from the media. Press conferences...tell'em nothing and take 10 minutes to do it.

Vision :

The glaring issue here is Matthew Knights. We finished 9th he lost the captaincy. We showed immediate effect in finishing 3rd...and now we finish 2nd bottom. Knights pays again. His career this time. If he is the only guy made to carry the can...I'll spew. I presume he's spoken to others...but they haven't resigne....yet.

He has fast-tracked Rodan, coughlan, Fiora, Zantuck and Newman...good vision there.

Player lists : Made a clanger in 2000 by not trading Daffy to Hawthorn when they offered a good deal. A deal that would have allowed us to snare jason Cloke (and then probably the othe two) as well as Coughlan. Apparently he also knocked back an offer on Bourke in 2000. One hopes he picks McGhie...OK he didn't do much in the Aussie champs...but he has a 16 yo brother who played U-16 state footy ...he is 197 cms and weighs 103 kilos, aged 16. Imagine that !!! Hope he can play ! Learn from the Cloke debacle !!!

...if the right guys are dropped /traded...if he uses the draft wisely and doesn't sacrifice good picks on old mates..then I'll be happy.

I don't know anything about coaching tactics...but I don't think I've ever played for a coach who can even spell 'tactics'...maybe someone else can make a contribution there.

leadership :
Problem is : on ground leadership. the boys have been really ordinary this year ...and I hope the leadership baton is passed to younger guys this year...Gaspar would be good. Coughlan would be a great vice captain. So would Ottens.

Unfortunately due to changes in the father son rule McGhie #2 won't be eligable to come to Richmond.

And Gasper as Captain? If he captains like he plays then we will only go around in circles.

Are you sure about that? I thought Robbie McGhie played more than 100 games with us?

Unfortunatly he played 81 games with Richmond. The new Father/Son rule will not be in this draft, but will be in place for the following one.

Interesting point on the "Supercoach" thing Sandeano ..

The thing is, very rarely do teams "pick up" a supercoach ...

Sheedy and Pagan were untried at senior level when chosen by Essendon & North. Neither had even been Assistant coaches.

Blight was a failure at North, and had questionable currency after not winning a flag at Geelong with a Superteam ...

Malthouse had struggled at Footscray, and was hardly a Supercoach when picked up by the Eags ... and then his move to C'wood was bankrolled by Packer, which is very hard to match.

Matthews was a genuine Supercoach when picked up by the Lions - and not surprisingly shaped them into a premiership side.

We could have Parkin, Hafey and Barassi tomorrow if we wanted ... but the game has passed them all by ...
