So they now they are giving away more environmentally unfriendly bags for free? Actually shitting harder on the environment than before? Idiots. It's not like they would lose business because all the other major chains were doing it as well. So they are trying to increase profits at the expense of the environment by luring people in with the promise of free bags.

Woolworths will follow soon as sure as night follows day.

Nah, the backlash has been intense. 'Indefinitely' will become another month, then Coles will fall into line.

The backlash has come from a loud vocal minority who also make up a minority of Coles customers so they are all safely ignored.

Coles would not of backed down unless their bottom line was being hit. If you think about it if someone forgets to bring a bag they will often spend less money so they can carry it out without a bag, its basically an incentive to spend less money which is very bad for profits.

The initial backlash was equally a noisy minority. Most people just get on with their day.

Also, how has their bottom line been hit if they have been giving them away for free since pretty much the beginning?

They are just giving their customers what they want, if someone doesn't want plastic bags than they don't have to take 1.

Then why remove the bags in the first place? Face it, they went into this without thinking through how to implement it properly, panicked and retreated. That's a sign of weakness.

Last few weeks they have not been giving them away for free. At the end of the days Coles number 1 objective is to make a profit, if they would make a bigger profit by not handing out free bags than they would not hand out free bags.

Neither have Woolies. Or Aldi. Or any retailer in WA. So if they are losing market share, it's not because of plastic bags.

What is with Australia and the ability to **** up the most basic of schemes?

Just keep the old thin ones. Charge 10c a bag for people who forget about the bags or don't care about the charge. The thicker bags was pointless as their even worse for the environment.

Have reusable canvas bags for sale. We have four at home and have used them for well over a year each and probably will for another year or longer.

To offset the community feeling that you are just profiteering of the bags donate any profit on bag sales to charity (as is done in the uk - or to "worthwhile causes" I believe is the exact term they use here).

Simples!

Charge .50c per bag
10c is too cheap

I have been using green bags for about 6 years.... (and no, I don’t live in Adelaide). It’s not that hard.

Your working on the logic that overall market share does not drop. I know myself that I make a decision without much thought to buy less because I don't have a bag and don't want to purchase the shopping bag.

You realise you can keep using your green bag ?

What? Of course I do.

I’m talking about the plastic bags. Charge 50c for them. I’m sure people won’t mind spending a whole $5 on 5 bags after that.

Apparently the concept of taking your own bag or bags to the supermarket is too difficult to understand for many Australians.

I'll never carry reusable bags with me. I just don't. But I'm more than happy to pay 15c a bag and have that money go towards recycling or some other environment conservation initiative. I'm sympathetic to the environmental issues that plastic bags have created, but I also loved the convenience. It's just disappointing that once again our governments have taken a sledgehammer to a nail. There were always other compromises they could have explored.
