Apart from the fact that he MUST be dropped this week, where is he going? He's a hard player I'll give him that, but he is definitely slow both on his feet and making decisions. These are attributes not easily improved. Will he ever be more than a 'hard at it' type player? For a #3 draft pick you'd hope so. If he wasn't such a high draft pick, there is no way he would've getting a game all year

Probably too early to be thinking about trade bait, but if we are still asking the same questions this time next year, we should seriously consider moving him on.

P.S the start of the years off-field indiscretions also don't help my view of him.

Thoughts

I think he's having somewhat of second year blues...Eventhough it's not his second year. Some players take longer to develop, you can't expect every player to have an impact in their first 50 games, players of a Griffen, McLean, Deledio and so on. We'll be patient with him, but he'll learn and develop and I can honestly see myself wearing the number 12 on the back of my jersey in a few seasons time when Jeffery retires and I'll have to take off the 34! This preseson is going to be essential for him, and I expect him to do significantly better next season. He could possibly even turn it on in the next few games. He's a tough cookie so the Sydney game should suit him great and you could possibly see a return to form for him. High hopes for Syl!

Oh please. He is in his 3rd year FFS.
The majority of draftees take 3-5 years to start playing good consistent footy.
Don't get me started on the way ND uses him. He is a midfielder, play him in the midfield! Simple! Wait a few years when he has established himself and has more confidence before we put him forward, and he should be a midfielder who rests forward, with very little time on the bench.

If he can grow a football brain he'll be a star for us.

In other words, I don't think he's going to be a star.

remember hes had a lot of injury problems. so he might take a bit longer to develop... that draft went cooney walker sylvia ray mclean. id say mclean and cooney are at the same level and the other 3 are still a few levels below. it might just take a bit of time. he's showing glimpses which is positive, and hes one of the best tacklers imo. just give him time!!

He needs to be played in the middle, he is hard at it, he played there in the NAB this year, should be in there now, especially with Moloney, Pickett etc. out. He is not a KP forward

He will come good in time, in fact I think he will be very good, but not all players can become superstars by the time they are 20 years old.

Once he gets a few more pre-seasons under his belt, plays around 100 games and plays in the midfield, then he will show his worth.

Maybe he's living off the fact that he starts on the ground in the AFL ps2 game and Brock starts on the bench (funny if you watched before the game on last saturday)

I was watching the game on Saturday thinking his development is a long way short of McLean's and he is also a bit behind Bate and Dunn (who I cannot work out why did not play on Saturday) and Jones (very impressive second game by him). I have heard big raps on Sylvia, but I am still waiting for him to deliver and I certainly hope that time is sometime soon. I wouldn't trade him (you don't often trade no 3 draft picks), but he had better start player better soon....

Hes got no football brain, tackles hard and hes fairly quick but cant use the attributes he has.

Sadly, in terms of development, Brock has left him badly behind.

he has only barely played 30 games. alot of people are forgetting the battle he has had with injuries. he is a very smart footballer. i cant believe people are getting on his case so quickly. he will be the star that everyone hopes he will be no problems at all. not everybody is going to develope like chris judd did. you need him to play the next four games, plus finals and next year have a full pre season and he will come along. no probs at all

A very smart footballer?

You've got to be kidding me, he punctured Fergusons lung in Rd.1 and was extremely close to taking out Green in a similar incident on the weekend.

Big deal, so nobody can make a mistake anymore. he is 20yrs old and has 30 games under his belt. cut him some slack.

Im not saying he cant develop into a very good player, as im sure he will become a good player, but at the moment, in my opinion, he is a very dumb footballer.

Once he gets more games, he'll get smarter with and without the ball but at the moment, he doesnt have the football brains of a Bruce or even of a McLean.

This is my point. how can people, his supporters no less, get on his case so bad. dumb footballers do not get drafted. simple as that. and if you check out your player of the year thread he is currently 5th.

6th, soon to be 7th actually, but point taken.

i get more sense on here than on the collingwood board! i dunno maybe i am a bit biased cos i grew up playing at merbein every 2nd year til he went to pioneers, but i have seen him when he was playing seniors at barely 16 and dominating. he will be a star

I've got every faith in Colin, i think he is just lacking confidence at the minute and thus trying too hard to impress. Hence flying for low percentage marks, and missing targets. I remember earlier in the year he took a brilliant pack mark, which shows his marking ability.

I think he needs to go back to basics, work hard defensively, which is his strong point and the confidence will come. Also with a full pre season next year, we should see the real Colin Sylvia.

Im sick of everyone comparing Sylvia and McLean! Not everyone develops at the same rate... Get off his back everyone hes only 20 years old ffs! I hope the kid has a blinder on the weekend to shut you all up.

here here. col is a gun and will be a star. Finally some melb supporters agree with me!

We only need to look at Trapper. He took ages to actually get any consistency, and showed flashes of brilliance (like Colin can do) before then stuffing something up completely, or go missing in the big games. Trapper didn't really come of age until 2002, years after being the first pick in '97. Now he is one of, if not the best, player at the club. And he had more expectation than Sylvia ever had.

I'm not saying Colin can be excused, far from it - he needs to learn to work harder, MUCH harder - but it's hardly time to hit the panic buttons.

Big call goal sneak, let's hope you are correct and that being on the basis that Brock is an excellent player and Sylvia is even better still....

I think this is ridiculous, what sort of moron could possibly even consider using him as trade bait. He has been played in the forward line for the most part, do you really expect him to dominate the game from there when the ball is generally kicked to Robertson, Neitz etc.
He has been injured for a large proportion of the year and hasn't really had a proper pre-season.....I just can't believe how everyone doubts him so much. Calling him a dumb footballer? come on, I think he will be one of our best once he gets time in the middle and can string some games together without getting injured. In terms of ability, he is easily in our top few.
