I've been rewatching from pilot episode and watched this one yesterday. It's my favourite episode I think, the troll Pierce gets for Troy gets me every time haha

It's such a great show, I think I stopped watching mid season 4 or 5 but I'll try and watch through this time. Reading this thread I see they got the 6 seasons but the movie is still in the making.
 
Because of commercials, I used to liken Community to The Big Bang Theory in my mind and for the longest time I avoided it like the plague. I thought there was no way a show with an over-the-hill Chevy Chase and the guy from The Soup! could be good. Then one day I am surfing channels for some reason during the afternoon and came across the secret trampoline episode on Nine Go, and while I didn't love the Abed plotline that episode, the reveal of the racist gardener at the end of the Jeff and Troy plot really won me over. Then the stolen pen episode came on and sold me entirely.

It was a small gag but I loved the show from about here:

Finally watching this, just through the start of S4. Great show, but very different than the first half of S1 which left me with cheap sitcom vibes in the style of a Scrubs or something similar. Evolved into something far better.

The Changnesia storyline always made me laugh :)

That was one of the best episodes from the later seasons. Actually one of the best episodes full stop.

Oh wow didn't know of the back story with Chevy and Donald, just thought it was mostly due to the Chevy and Dan issues.

Given the above it's probably a good thing Chevy isn't back then, seems like Chevy hasn't changed with the times

I think Chevy may have been too good a casting choice for Pierce, the direction they took the character seemed way too in line with who he was. I like Season 1 Pierce when he still seemed imbued with some wacky wisdom and wasn't a complete dick 100% of the time. He was basically an older, clumsier, more senile Jeff. I love that Titanic episode where he gives Jeff the speech about how he was born wrapped in his umbilical cord and how he perseveres because he's always felt the odds were against him.

A bit like Britta and Chang, Season 1 Pierce seemed way more human and real. It's a shame the character devolved the way he did but his departure seems kind of natural in hindsight. The two replacements for him were much funnier than anything Pierce did in Season 3 and 4 as well.

If they ever brought Pierce back I'd prefer to see it via flashbacks with Joel playing younger Pierce (as he did in the National Lampoon's movie playing a younger Chevy). While faking his death seems like a very Pierce thing to do I feel like it would cheapen the later series' theme of people naturally moving on with their lives (it's a good to have a grounded sombre touchstone like someone staying dead).
