Help please! Just had a sudden electrical storm and didn't get a chance to turn off the computers. My one is ok but hubby's one is fried. Won't start at all and he hasn't the time or inclination to fix it. Can anyone recommend a decent computer repairer, preferably on the northside or anywhere close to the city? Thanks.

Don't know anyone on the Northside.

Its possible the power supply unit in the system got zapped. In this case, there is a small chance that it may be fine in a day or so. This has happened to me before.

If your power supply is gone for good, it shouldn't cost more than 100 dollars to be fixed. The power supply costs 50 bucks max, and its about a 10-15 minute job for someone who knows what they are doing.

Worst case scenario is that the motherboard is fried, this could be substantially more costly and could involve an almost complete rebuild and alot of new parts. Factoring in the labour etc involved, in this case, buying a new system may actually be cheaper.

Thanks for the great advice, BrownDog! Very much appreciated. Yeah, hubby is hoping it's just the power supply. Will give it a few days before we contact a local repairer.

My guess is by the weekend, he'll have a go at fixing it himself! Either that or he will try and talk me into buying a whole new computer!

The moment the motherboard goes, it tends to mean a (essentially) new system for any computer older than a couple of years because of the constant turnover of connections. I've had that happen to me before, and it meant we would've needed to upgrade our CPU, power supply and video card which put it well over the price of a new computer at the time. Hopefully it's just the power supply, and doubly hopefully the hard drive is all good. Don't know anyone who fixes that in Brisbane, as I tend to be a self-fixer if it's possible.

its one of those things, anyone who is in the know with computers, wont know good repairs because they do it all themselves. i've been building pc's for 5 years and i couldn't tell you one good repair shop.

the above advice is correct tho. if the mobo is gone (depending on the age of the machine) it will most likely be cheaper to just buy a new one. now is actually a pretty good time, as prices on a lot of parts has dropped lots in the past few months.

but here is hoping its only the psu and you'll be good to go in no time.

only advice is to make sure any pc repairer details what parts they are replacing and why, and exactly what they are replacing it with.

Yep if it's the motherboard it may be time to do something like this (language warning):

(From the terrific film "Office Space")

Ha, ha! Yeah, hubby and I love that scene from "Office Space". :D But do you want to know the number of times I have threatened to do that to his computer if he doesn't help more around the house! :o

Thank you to everyone for your advice too. Hubby took his computer out to a repairer this afternoon and armed with your info, he got it sorted. Cheers.
