I think this may have been done, but quite some time ago. This has been sparked by me re-discovering one in the last week or so. I've always had the opinion that Queensryche's 'Operation Mindcrime' (part 1 of course!) is the greatest of all time. I still think this, but I've pulled out Dream Theater's 'Scenes From a Memory' again recently, for the 1st time in 5-6 years, and I reckon it's a very strong challenger. Everything works to perfection on that album, just like it does on OM. The narrative is very strong, and the songs work as part of the storyline, or on their own. 'Home' is an absolutely enormous song. The whole album is truly epic and makes for highly involving listening.
Anyway, what's your favourite concept piece?

Dream Theater turn everything they touch into gold, I enjoy all they're work.
I think Martin Grech's "Unholy" is a masterpiece in terms of concept albums.
I've also just started listening to Caïna and Ion Dissonance after some reviews I read in RockSound & Hammer. Some really great work out there. :thumbsu:

Mars Volta's second album:thumbsu:

Radiohead O.K Computer and Kid A - two massive concept albums that have been as bigger influence as they should have soley because todays artists simply lack the song writing ability

Foo Fighters In Your Honour - Dave Grohl probably said the words concept album in every single sentence when he release this one...but bar a couple of songs it was a shocker:thumbsd:

Pardon my ignorance, but excactly what is a concept album?

It's probably the album equivalent to a movie. All the songs are interconnected by a storyline/serious concept or theme running through the entire album. An obvious one is Pink Floyd's 'The Wall'. They are often maligned, but if done well, they can be truly rivetting....

Cool, cheers !

'Quadrophenia' and 'Tommy' by The Who
'Pet Sounds' by the Beach Boys
'Sgt. Peppers' by the Beatles
'Arthur' by the Kinks
'Dark Side of the Moon' by Pink Floyd

All very well know, all classics.

Ayreon - The Human Equation
Pink Floyd - The Wall
Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime
Fear Factory - Obsolete
WASP - The Crimson Idol

The Opeth, Dream Theater, and Strapping Young Lad vocalists all as characters on the one concept album - can't beat the Ayreon one in my opinion :thumbsu:

Concept album can be defined pretty broadly. Midnight Oil's 'Diesel and Dust' and Green Day's 'American Idiot' can both pass as concept albums.

Na, I reckon the concept/storyline needs to be extremely strong and pretty obvious to be considered a true concept album. Otherwise it's similar to some of Rush's albums (eg Power Windows, Roll the Bones), which have definite themes running through them, but aren't actually concept albums in the true sense of the term....

That cuts out Sgt Peppers then (which has no concept apart from the first 2 and last 2 tracks)...Abbey Road is more of a concept album.

But yeah Roddy, your description is more accurate of what a concept album is. I haven't heard too many though.

Pain of Salvation- One hour by the concrete lake, The Perfect Element Part 1, Remedy Lane, Be, Scarsick

Most of their albums are concept pieces. 'Be' is the pick of them. An album delving into the thoughts of 'god' and 'man', the destruction of the earth, and the creation of a new one. Self indulgent as it gets, but fascinating stuff :thumbsu:

Would you consider the following albums 'concept albums'?

Muse - Absolution
Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
Flaming Lips - At War with the Mystics

Haven't heard any of the above, sorry. Can't comment. Do those albums' concepts/storylines stand out? I think it has to be obvious that the band specifically and consciously set out to create a concept piece/album with a storyline. Maybe use that as a judgement...

Rick Wakeman - Journey To The Centre Of The Earth and
The Myths And Legends Of King Arthur And The Knights Of The Round Table
