3 or 4 articles today on adelaidenow. I'm sick of hearing about it. The AFL seems to bear the brunt for what is a total personal choice. I was concussed half a dozen times during my time playing footy, plus shoulder dislocations and other injuries that cause my 49 year old body ongoing discomfort. Why does nobody point fingers at Woodville South, Rosewater, St Peters, Pooraka etc? Why does the AFL bear the brunt of what is a personal choice to play a sport that feeds our need for combat or desire for $? It's pure bullshit.

Starting a thread is an odd reaction to not wanting to hear about something.

The only response you need to know can be summed up in three words: duty of care.

You may not like it, you may not agree with it - the law doesn't give a shit about your feelings.

Why the AFL and not some backwater league? One can be proven much more easily than another. There are a plethora of other differences though it seems pointless to list them all.

But most of all, the 'back in my day' stuff means nothing anymore. Tell it to a history book.

I thought you were born in 1970? How many years do you plan on being 49 for?

Missus was born in 1970, I got horribly drunk and stoned one night and couldn't face my original account. So I geniuosly registered under my missus' information. I was bulldogralph or something like that.

Im not entirely sure what the issue is

Too many articles? The Advertiser or that you dont think concussion is an issue?

You're only young so you have memory loss to look forward to - ooh pretty butterfly - and I think the girls should win today

Most of us played in similar situations - I recall sitting in the changeroom half time just hearing this buzzing sound - until I realised it was the coach talking. Am I concerned over the findings from the last 10-15 years? Yep but I am certain the clubs that I played for - half which dont exist anymore - did everything they could at the time

Plus as we see with AFL players the '' yeah I'm good to go coach dont let xxx take my spot'' will always persist until somebody else takes that power away from them

The Randall thing is ridiculous. It should be up to her, and the club’s medical staff.

I get that the AFL is trying to avoid class actions, but this dive down the rabbit hole of health collectivism is just perverse and is not going to end well for anybody.

The AFL and the players need to come to an agreement that individual players are responsible for their own health decisions and risk management.

But they won't. AFL is a workspace. Hope you can come to an agreement with your workplace when you lose an arm

' it's only a flesh wound'

Not really the same thing
It is when it's dismissed as something between player and club medico. How did that work for Hartlett

Players and club personnel will always opt for an on field return rather than sit a player out.

It's more like losing an arm in the workplace, and then the worker coming to an agreement with the workplace to accept the risks associated with continuing to work. Which probably wouldn't happen in that instance.

Long term brain issues caused by concussion is a known thing. I don't see the issue in players being given the choice to accept the risk or not. They are adults and can take some responsibility for their own actions and choices under medical advice.

Talk to Scott Stevens and Dean Kemp about their quality of life now and the choices they made then

They really shouldn't complain because adulting

Pretty much, and the AFL has already tried a method which is a bit more flexible in the past with the concussion test, and all it led to is players flubbing it to get around it, so they didn't get subbed out. Thus defeating the purpose.

Sucks for Randall, but them the breaks.

So they need to be protected from themselves, is what you’re saying. They need the AFL to be their mummy
AFL know they have a duty of care to put in protocols or they will be subject to significant litigation later...

I think it will be interesting to know whether in the future players will be able to sue the AFL when every single player in the AFL right now would know the significant risks and long term health complications that concussion can cause.

Maybe back in the 80s and 90s when no one knew or cared, but that's not the case now. When players take the field after concussion they clearly know the risk they are taking, and therefore should accept responsibility for that action

We're talking different eras here. Decades ago education around concussion was woeful. That is no longer the case for modern AFL players

The AFL will go the same way as the NFL with a week break before the GF. Get rid of the bye after the season which is a major loss of momentum. Have the Brownlow and and a state of origin or all star game in the week off before the grand final. People want to see the best out there in the final game.

Randall speaks of an E Grade grand final that she saw as a kid and a young boy died after a massive collision. The lad had been concussed the week before and he’d gone to 7 different doctors to get clearance to play. She made a good decision.
