In a brief, three week senior coaching career, Matthew Egan became a winning AFL coach.
In a no win situation, with a team that had 100 point losses in the seven weeks prior, he came in and took the reigns for a team that was lacking direction. No doubt, it was to be a thankless task, which I'm sure was offered without scrutiny or negativity by anyone at the club - considering the outcome of the Hird resignation/removal in the week prior.
With his first game in charge round 21 2015 - being a 2 point loss to Gold Coast... after losing by 111 points against Adelaide in round 20, Egan also kept Essendon in the game against eventual finalists Richmond for 2 3/4 quarters in round 22 and manufactured a gritty win against another finals missing team in Collingwood in the last round of the season.
Much like our support players at the start of 2015, filling in when the players chose not to participate in the pre-season competition, Matthew Egan may not be remembered for more than a few seasons by many outside the club... well to be a 2020's sports trivia question no doubt. But in the EFC's time of need, congratulations on not only stepping up to take the role - but actually owning the position and asserting some of your own flair to the players and our game-plan.
I can only hope that the experience holds you in good stead for the EFC, or many other roles that pop up in the future of AFL football.
