AFTER three beautiful daughters Australian basketball legend Andrew Gaze and his wife, Melinda, were keen to try for a boy.

So Melinda went on a special conception diet for "boys" while Andrew had to boost his caffeine intake, wear boxer shorts and ensure his testicles did not overheat after basketball training.

"I was having a lot of caffeine and after every practice session I had to ice down there," Gaze says.

"I don't know about the science of it but they say an athlete's temperature can become too hot for sperm. It sounded like witch doctory stuff but we can't complain - it worked."

Eight years ago the couple welcomed Mason into the world. The Gazes had visited Melbourne fertility expert Sue Roebuck after Melinda had experienced two miscarriages before her third child.

For two months prior to Mason's conception Melinda went on a diet high in sodium and potassium, which included meat and soft drinks, to increase the odds of having a boy.

Roebuck also advised Melinda to prepare an alkaline-based douche which she applied before sex.

Melinda also had regular blood tests to pinpoint her peak ovulation time, then the couple only had a 24-hour window for sex.

"I said to Andrew 'Come on, we are up,' she says. "He was conceived just after the Sydney Olympics so we think of Mason as our Olympic baby.

"I wanted a boy, more so than Andrew, who is more easy-going. When I found out I was having a boy I had the biggest smile on my face.

"You never know, if we didn't do the diet we might have got the boy as well but we did the diet and it worked."

Surely there's a 16 or 17 year old ready made premiership hero type player out there who's being looked at for next year's draft. Rush the adoption papers through, surname becomes Carey, father-son to North. Great success.
