Bevo coached them to the Premiership but you could still see the work Macca had put in them with Contested Ball in 2016, it was last year it started dropping off, this year we’ve lost contested ball both matches

well we cant play any other ways due to poor kicking and marking , we are slow as shit also. contested ball was the only attribute this list had. and now we cant even do that right.

Nearly all of our best clearance players from 2015 & 2016 are still on the list and, other than Picken, all should be better now. But Libba & Wallis have been injured and Bont & Dahl have been spending more time forward to paper over the problems there.

The centre square setups clearly aren’t working, but that may be a product of who is and isn’t in there.

We need Wallis & Libba in the side more than we need an old coach back. We need Dickson & Redpath back in so Bont & Dahl can spend more time in the midfield. We need Boyd to actually give us first use occasionally, unlike Roughead.

Ed Richards took some good grabs for a first game, players need to start getting their hands dirty and win some ball like they did in the years leading up to 2015 and 2016 or we are totally screwed for a long time to come

How is that an answer to my post? And how could it not matter who is on the list? That’s a ridiculous comment.

The personnel in the midfield in the first two weeks has been different to 2015 & 2016 for the reasons I gave.

Our three best clearance players in those years were Libba, Wallis & Bont. Two haven’t played and the other is our CHF for stretches. Picken was great for us in clearances and tackles and he hasn’t played. Dunkley was another in 2016 and he’s 90% forward now. Dahl was another that was a big tackler and secondary clearance player and he’s being played majority forward. Smith hasn’t played.

Add Libba, Wallis, Picken and Smith to the team and play Dahl, Bont and Dunkley in the middle more and suddenly we’d be quite a good clearance/CP team.

I checked and in the 7 games Ayce Cordy played in 2015 we lost the clearances 5 times and the contested possessions 6 times. The two times we won the clearances were only by 1 or 2.

So, obviously it at least matters who is in the ruck.

McCartney coached 3 seasons. When he first joined in November 2011 he preached contested ball and the mantra that every player must be able to win his own ball. Part time rucks, no big forwards, 2 mediocre tall defenders (Hamling and Roberts). Beveridge added coaching nous, handball and self belief. Won the flag on the back of contested ball. Yesterday contested possessions were 136 to 110 against. We'll struggle until contested ball is back. McCartney as an assistant might be the answer.

What’s probably fair to say is that we need to improve contested ball and it may be the coaches currently working on it aren’t getting it right. Not having Libba, Picken, Smith and Wallis is a big part of it though.

Can’t recall the exact setup I’m thinking of from the weekend but I looked at it and immediately thought ‘we cannot win this clearance.’ It was all players who have barely played in the guts.

Personally as a start I’d bring Wallis and Dickson in and plant Dicko forward so Bont and Dahl can spent some time where they belong.

Everyone is very aware of my thoughts on Macca, and if you actually bothered to get some context instead of just flapping you would know I’m not referring to his on field performance but more his treatment of some players and staff, but let’s not pretend regardless of stats his on field was sh!t also was rubbish also.

Contested possessions are a w@nk stat and we didn’t win a flag on the actual contested possies count mate.

You do know that a free kick and a knock on are both counted as a contested possession? Also a third man up tap is. Minus all those that we lead in 2016 and take RAW Contested possies which was what Macca wanted and we are miles of.

Macca has next to zero to do with the flag other than getting the playing group to hate him so much they had to move him on and we got Bev in.
