Contested Possessions

How highly do you rate this statistical category in today's football? We are just about the best in this key area. What are your thoughts here?

I do rate them. Basically are the statistics you need to lead to win games. That and tackle count.

Although I'm not sure if ALL contested possessions listed are actually contested possessions.

It differs from game to game, and team to team IMO.

I reckon the likes of Judd, Selwood, Black and our own Ball and Pendles get given greater leniency in terms of what is a contested possession and what isn't, compared to lesser known or younger players.

But the stat is important in terms of results, I remember Mick saying we won the Sydney game despite having less tackles ,less contested possessions and we also kicked less goals then the opposition, and to him that was a rarity.

They don't hold the luster they used to since they've been watered down. However they're still a pretty good reflection of how you're teams travelling considering teams win 90% of the time when they take out both the tackle and contested possession count.

The criteria they use to define a contested possession is BS, it makes some players look far harder than they really are.

Having said that, it's still a reasonable stat and genuine contested possessions are like gold nuggets.

Stat is BS. Mark Murphy is a classic, he seems to get plenty of them but never wins contests. WTF is up with that?

Contested possessions should be measured together with disposal efficiency. It's not just about winning it, but about using it as well.

I'm referring to judging players here, not teams.
