and so it is - tonight - the beginning of an endless summer of COUNTDOWN reruns on rage!

GAVIN WOOD!

MOLLY MELDRUM!

CRAP MUSIC!

it does not get any better than this.

I'm doing a community service by informing people of this.

then, tomorrow, everybody can come in and post about the awful things we saw on it

That was a real eye opener. The passing of time had lead me to believe that maybe mainstream Australian music wasn't that bad in the early 80's - I was wrong.
And by the way what was with all the beards?????

Damn I missed it. Used to love Countdown, it was so bad it was good.
Will that be running on just Saturday nights, or both Friday's & Saturday nights Tiger Fan?

Darn I missed it. What was Rock Arena about?
Played some Todd Rundgren, The Damned (including a cover version of "Eloise"), Robyn Hitchcock... all I can remember at the moment.

Ahh yes, like it used to when they had them on RAGE before.
Cool, thanks for that Horse :) :thumbsu:
January is a special time of the year. :) I pretty much write off my Saturday nights in January so I can stay at home and watch the old Countdowns. I wish they'd play them more often.

What time are they on? I might too.

I caught ' Something To Fall Back On " but what else did they play?
They also played "Open Your Eyes" by Nazz (Rundgren was a member in the 1960s apparently. A cheesier music video you will never see :) ) and "Can We Still Be Friends".

Yep, Open My Eyes from 1968, first single by Nazz.
As for CWSBF - what a crap song. The only one of his I hate with a passion.

I'm not all that familiar with his material. CWSBF is one of the few songs of his that I know of, apart from the Deface The Music album, which I thought was very cleverly done. He's one of those artists I've always been meaning to get around to listening to/investigating further, but never seem to get there. Got any recommendations?

I'm embarrassed to say I'm actually going out tonight and will therefore miss both Countdown episodes.

I just hope I don't get home while Recovery is on and unsuccessfully resist the urge to smack Dylan Lewis' head in :o

oh yeah, plenty. Spinning me out you know the Utopia album Deface The Music though. Some great stuff on there - Feel Too Good and Always Late, great songs.

Hmm where do I start - his three Nazz LPs were good but IMO you have to know his solo work to properly appreciate them.
First solo LP ' Runt ' - issued 1970 - is a good place to start.
Contains first single ' We Got To Get You A Woman " , great song. This LP showcases a lot of his talents in different areas.

Something / Anything ( 1972 ) is a great album also, double LP involving Stevie Nicks on back up vocals and a lot of experimental sounds.

Initiation ( 1975 ) has one 35 minute instrumental set that is mindblowing at high volume, experimenting with synthesisers, sitars etc.

Hermit Of Mink Hollow ( 1978 ) an attempt by Todd to come into mainstream commercialism, perhaps as a result of his production and guitar work on Meatloaf's ' Bat Out Of Hell ' album the same year. It was this album that spawned the single " Can We Still Be Friends " ( Oct 78 ) as well as the follow ups " You Cried Wolf " ( Jan 79 ) and " All The Children Sing " ( Apr 79 ). Todd really shot himself in the foot here if he was looking for commercial acceptance. Although CWSBF was a huge worldwide hit ( #1 US, #5 UK, #3 Aust ) it is not favourably remembered by most people, ending up quite often an entry in many people's ' Jukebox From Hell " lists. even a huge fan like me considers it probably THE worst song he recorded.
Far better tracks on the LP that should have been lifted as 45s.." Hurting For You" , " Too Far Gone ", " Fade Away " & " Out Of Control ". Interesting LP this one, if yuo can, get a copy and give it a listen, and see what you think. IMO his most contoversial, debate provoking work.

The Ever Popular Tortured Artist Effect ( 1982 ) featured the single ' Hideaway ' and was a quirky pop album.

Nearly Human ( 1989 ) featured Bobby Womack and had three excellent singles " For The Want Of A Nail ' ( Jun 89 ) Parallel Lines ( Nov 89 ) Feel It ( Mar 90 ).

Utopia album ' Adventures In Utopia " ( 1979 ) is the best work of the Utopia project. Better tracks are " Caravan" , " Set Me Free " and 'Shot I NThe Dark "
Other Utopia singles worthy of a listen are " Crazy Lady Blue " ( 1977 ) and " Love IS The Answer " ( early 1978 ) both from the album " Oops - Wrong Planet ".

Hope that helps, plenty more where that came from.

aww they now start playing recovery as well. I hated recovery..really did. I wish they would play 5 countdown episodes and 2 rock arenas like they used too.

They played the first episode of countdown a few years ago and i have it recorded. Also played rock arenas triple j 10th birthday celebrations where Midnight Oil performed to a select crowd on goat island. A very magical concert with a then beautiful Sydney putting on a real show with the weather.

I actually remember the concert as my sister was really trying to score tickets for the gig. Ahh a lot has happened in 20 years eh..triple j being the a true alternative station out of Sydney unlike what is has become these days.

Some of the artists they got on countdown where down and out embarrassing. One episode they had some band sing "nice **** shame about the head" (along those lines) and they pulled the plug on the performance mid way. It was funny.
