Dear Prudence by Doug Parkinson...am I showing my age or what!!

Can a band's remix (years later) of an earlier tune of their's be classed as a cover? If so, I also select Girl U Want by Devo
I think you could cover your own song as longs as it was re-recorded with new vocals and music, otherwise if it is just a re-mix then I think it would be a stretch to call it a cover. BTW Soundgarden do a pretty good cover of Girl U Want too but not as good as Devo’s original IMHO.

Siouxsie and the Banshees did a fantastic version of "Wheels on Fire". I think it may have been a Bob Dylan song but i"m not sure. Anyway I haven't heard a version better the Banshees.

But her version of Lloyd Cole's "Rattlesnakes" was just awful! :o

Tori has not produced an awful piece of music yet. Her latest album, which is all covers is just fantastic.

Reel Big Fish - Take On Me
is pretty awesome

has anyone heard the Midnight Oil tribute album, its of a number of aussie bands covering one Midnight Oil song

heard a couple, SFK and Frenzal Rhomb do a good job, anyone heard the whole album?

I bought the Midnight Oil tribute album last week - is a real mixed bag. Some songs have been changed around heaps. I'm more of a punk/alternative fan so some I liked more than others. SFK (Dreamworld), Frenzal Rhomb (Dead Heart) and Jebediah's (when the generals talk) are particular highlights.

Even though I'm a big Area 7 fan, their cover of Read about it totally sux. :(

With you on RBF by the way.

Thought of a couple of others:
Hi-Standard: Californian Dreamin
Millencolin: Every breath you take
Living End: Prisoner theme

I think most tribute albums are mixed bags. The only tribute album that I've ever heard and thought that every song was done well was "Step Right Up" which was a tribute to Tom Waites.

The bands are stuck with what to do. If they do a song in a note for note reproduction of the the original version, then what's the point? But if they do it in their own musical style, then they could f*ck it up. Overall, those bands who cover a song in their own style and do it well and make the cover version their own tend to be the most rewarding to listen to.

I've just had a good look through this entire thread ... and I couldn't find one reference to what is one of the most covered songs of all time.

That abortion of a thing that Led Zeppelin did on their 4th album ... Stairway to God-Forsaken Bloody Heaven ... If I ever hear that piece of crap again I will vomit for a month.

In the 80s there was an entire album of Stairway to Heaven covers. Just about every band and their dog had a version of it.

A couple of real pissers were the Rolf Harris version, complete with wobble-board ... and the Leonard Teale spoken word version which sounded like the Man From Snowy River.

It's also a song that every 15th rate garage heavy metal band in history has tried to do ... with invariably appalling results.

As for the original ... it came out about 1971. And I kinda liked it for a while, while I was young and stupid.

By about 1975 I'd heard the rotten bloody thing that many times that I couldn't stand it.

I will carry my passionate hatred of this song to the grave.

Generally, I am opposed to the death penalty ... but I make an exception in the case of people found guilty of playing this song.

**Stairwell to hell**

I'm watching Music Max at the mo and The Clash are doing Clapton's I Fought The Law (And The Law Won.) Haven't seen it in along time and had completely forgotten they even did a cover of it.

Alf, you beat me to it. Was gonna mention Rolf's version of it.

I am at a loss to why Stairway is so revered. It's ok, but I can't rate it as some kind of icon to be worshipped.

When Rolf Harris released the song as a single all the Zep fans went feral. Get a life. As Rolf said "If someone doesn't want a song covered then don't publish it."

BTW: I have the video of all the Stairway versions from 'Money or the Gun'. My fave would have to be the B-52's cover band version, with the lyric's sung over the Rock Lobster music :D

A couple of years ago Paradise Motel did a great cover of a Cars song, but I can't remember which one. I thought it was heaps better than the origianl, but I never really liked the Cars anyway.
