Hey lads. Curious about this bloke. As a youngster I recall him finishing runner up in the 91 Brownlow. I know he had injuries, retired for one season, then played for Melbourne etc.

How good was he? I was too young to know what he did in his " prime " years and never saw much of him as I started to follow the game after he peaked.

What I do recall is the likes of Matera, Sumich and Kemp ripping us to shreds.

I remember before a final they made thousands of turley masks for fans to wear. Malthouse said no way as he didnt think turley needed the extra pressure so they ended up in storage somewhere. This was 25 odd years so this may not be exactly what happened. Anyone remember this?

I thought they actually did that or at least of eagle players before that game vs the hawks 91 finals.

I remember Dean Wallis busted open his nutsack at the MCG. 92 I think?

Was a megastar in Perth in 1991 but dropped off very quickly. Still part of the 92 flag side but wasn't anywhere near his 91 form. Was just outside the best 21 (as it was at the time) for the 94 flag. Both he and Mitchell White were the unlucky ones that year.

Think we traded him for Andy Lovell from Melbourne?

Was an orphan but allegedly had excellent "footballing" bloodlines which, to his disappointment, made him a second cousin to one of his more annoying team mates.

Yep, straight swap for Lovell.

Before that, he retired early in 1993 to go off and find his birth parents (or something like that?) He returned in 1994 but never reached the same heights. He was in the side late in the year but got suspended for whacking Greg Williams (in retaliation, Diesel started it but of course got off scot free and went on to win the Brownlow) and couldn't fight his way back in for the finals.

Yep, a redhead who liked a bit of peroxide.

Turls was very, very good. He just believed that there was other things in the world to do, didn't think about footy 24 / 7.

If true, that is facinating. Who said spending early hours scrolling through BF was a waste of time!

Turley spent a couple of years ducking and dodging objects far more lethal than boots and bodies as a member of the Western Australian tactical response group. Former Richmond premiership captain Bruce Monteath, who coached Turley at West Perth In 1987-88, remembers Turley,
a diligent trackhorse, not fronting for training one night. He found out later that bis player had been on assignment, helping to track down a crazed German tourist who had gone on a killing spree in the outback. Monteath believes the hair-raising line of work may have helped give Turley the unflappable approach that characterises his style on the field.
