Crawford's naked truth
27 June 2004 Sunday Herald Sun
Jon Ralph
FANS of Shane Crawford are likely to be shocked by nudity and swearing in a powerful documentary on the Hawthorn captain.
The 90-minute special on Crawford's 2003 season contains explicit images, tells of his frustration with football and exasperation at being stalked, and offers intriguing insights into the star's sexuality.
In Shane Crawford Exposed, he admits his sexuality was an issue when breaking up with on-again, off-again girlfriend Olivia Anderson.
"She did ask me, `Are you gay? Is that why?' " he says.
"I had to assure her that I wasn't, but did say it wasn't out of the question.
"I suppose there is a lot of evidence saying I am heading down a different path. Why do people think I'm gay? Probably because I have some traits that may be gay. There are players that are gay . . . It's going to be a very brave person, the first person that (comes out)."
Anderson says she told Crawford she would stay loyal to him whatever his sexuality: "I used to ask him (whether he was gay). I said I would support him," she says.
Crawford and Anderson are back together, but he is still propositioned by men and women.
In the documentary, women expose their breasts to Crawford and the camera. The player is shown naked on several occasions.
His mother, Dianne, reveals Crawford has always been an exhibitionist.
"There is no secret he loves being naked," she says.
Anderson says Crawford has always been an affectionate person. "He loves being nude and he loves having a cuddle, whether it's male or female," she says.
The couple has discussed marriage, but Crawford says he is reluctant to enter a union hastily.
"I have seen people rush down that path a lot and make that mistake," he says.
Crawford also talks about two stalkers, one male and one female, who have bothered him in recent years.
The man was caught after calling Crawford's mother up to 40 times a day, pestering her for his phone number, while the woman sent him countless notes and also followed him.
"Somehow this girl has been popping up in in places, pretty much watching me, and that's very, very disturbing when you think about it; when you receive notes that say: `I saw you coming out of the tribunal, I saw you at this cafe, I look forward to seeing you on Saturday night,' " he says.
"Probably what is the most frustrating thing about it is I have absolutely no idea who it is. You never know what people are going to do and that's probably the scariest thing about it."
In the documentary, Crawford attempts to trap the female stalker by parking his car outside Hawthorn Football Club while a secretary watches for loiterers.
His plan fails when, instead of one person, more than a dozen gather around him.
Shane Crawford Exposed will air on Channel 9 on July 7, 8.30pm.
