Well, Virgin claims to have no fees and low interest (or something like that). Don't know how tough that policy makes their credit checks though...

The best deal is to stay away from them. Save up, say, $2,500 and stick it in a bank account, attached to a credit card for automatic payment at the end of the month.

Then when you spend any make sure you pay it back by the end of the month or hit yourself with a $25 charge, meaning the next month you have to bring it up to $2,525.

It would take discipline but you will be much better off financially and still have the advantage of having plastic.

I do something like this but I have a bank balance that fluctuates a fair bit so it doesn't work in the same way. I WISH I had done this when I got my first card but I didn't know much about money back then (and still have a long way to go).

Credit cards are straight from hell. I do have a credit card but it is only a $1,000 limit and if I use it I repay it straight away. But to answer your question, Bendigo Bank seem to be fairly reasonable or else a teacher's credit union(you don't have to be a teacher to bank there).

Only have a small credit limit, if at all. Prefer to use them as a debit card, they're very handy to have and you need one with certain purchases. Try hiring a car on holidays if you don't have one.

I'm baffled by people who racked up '000s on these things. My girlfriend was telling me today that the renovations to her mother's home were done on a credit card.. all $10K worth. My jaw literally dropped. Madness.

I don't 'need' one because I don't have any trouble paying bills or anything, I just want one because it will make it so much easier when I want to buy concert tickets! :D

My friend informed me that the Bank Of Melbourne actually offer a debit/visa card which works the same as a Credit Card except you have to have the money in there before you can use it...so it's like a savings account, except you can use it as a credit card..I think I'll get that :)

I think they're called "multiaccess" cards, which means that they work as credit cards, except that they access your own funds. I have one from St George, and I don't know how I ever did without it. I'm pretty sure there are a few banks that do them, so I guess look around. I definitely recommend it as an alternative to an actual credit card.

So here's a question to anyone who knows, are there any bonusses to having a credit card that don't come with these multiaccess cards? I have heard american friends talking about "building credit" which I guess is about being able to get a loan somewhere down the track. How important is this? (can you tell I haven't got a clue?)
