Patrick Dangerfield slams Geelong for being "a shit place"
Just over six months after signing a new three-year contract for the Adelaide Crows, star midfielder Patrick Dangerfield has slammed the city of Geelong, saying it's a "shit place on so many levels".
The comments from Dangerfield come after Geelong coach Chris Scott criticized the re-signed Crow for not "letting Geelong get him as a free agent". Scott, who last year angrily slammed Adelaide for being "deceptive" in trade discussions after Steven Motlop departed for South Australia's largest club, also said that re-signing Dangerfield was "against the spirit of our great game".
Scott's thoughts on free agency and his character offended Dangerfield, who revealed he held off agreeing to terms with Geelong "just to annoy their smug fans".
"Looking back on my decision to stay in Adelaide, the reasons are more clear than ever," Dangerfield stated. "Why would I want to move to a club that believed they were entitled to my services?"
When asked whether he preferred Adelaide or the city he grew up in, Dangerfield said he "recently came to the realization that Geelong is a shit place on so many levels".
"In Adelaide you get the beautiful hills, excellent culture, and close wineries. In Geelong you have to deal with Darryn Lyons, and so many people are on ice you really worry for your safety in the city streets. And how would Mardi get a job there when all the industry is closing down?"
Dangerfield did admit that Mogg's Creek was a "lovely seaside village", but claimed there is "really nothing to do there". The town of 354 people, mostly Dangerfield's family, had "nothing on Adelaide".
The Adelaide Crows, currently sitting atop the ladder after smashing West Coast in Perth, take on Geelong at Adelaide Oval this weekend. Geelong will be without their only midfielder, Joel Selwood, after he badly injured his neck ducking into a tackle during last week's horrific 235-point home-ground loss to Brisbane.
Dangerfield says the Crows aren't getting ahead of themselves at this early stage in the season, even though another humiliating loss for Chris Scott's team is on the cards
