News
OVER the next few weeks, afl.com.au will look at how each club is placed going into the 2008 pre-season, which has already started for some.

Starting with the Crows, we review each club's list after the AFL Exchange Period, see what the players got up to on their holidays and reveal what the fitness coaches have in store over the summer.

New arrivals
On field: Brad Symes (Port Adelaide), Brad Moran (Kangaroos) and Greg Gallman (upgraded from rookie list).

In the coach’s box: Ben Hart (assistant coach - back line and player development) and Matthew Clarke (part-time assistant coach - ruck).

Delisted: Jason Torney, Matthew Bode, Ian Perrie, John Hinge, Darren Pfeiffer, Andrew McIntyre (rookie) and James Turner (rookie).

Traded: Marty Mattner (Swans), Ben Hudson (Western Bulldogs) and John Meesen (Melbourne).

Retired: Mark Ricciuto

What I did on my holiday
Defender Kris Massie ventured all the way into the wilds of Africa to participate in some charity work during his end-of-season break.

Young ruckman Ivan Maric also left Australian shores and returned to his picturesque homeland of Croatia.

Trent Hentschel revisited his roots as well, albeit a couple of hours away in the Northern Territory, and he was joined for a spot of fishing by teammates Bernie Vince, Jason Porplyzia and Ken McGregor.

Brett ‘The Birdman’ Burton wed long-time partner, Jane Cashen, and spent a week far away from his teammates honeymooning in Mauritius.

Family men Simon Goodwin and Nathan Bassett also spent the break by their partners’ side as they prepared for the births of their respective children due in December and January.

Pre-season training starts…
The Crows’ first, second and third-year players will commence pre-season training on Monday, November 12. The club’s more senior players have the luxury of an extra week’s break with most expected to join the main group by November 19.

Pre-season plans
Forget Kangaroo Island and Strathalbyn - the Crows are off to the economic powerhouse of Dubai for their 2008 training camp. Adelaide’s NAB Cup opener against Collingwood on Saturday, February 9 will double as a camp with the team expected to arrive in the United Arab Emirates a week prior to the clash.

The Crows’ fitness staff will have plenty of sand to work with in their new environs, but perhaps scaling the world’s biggest skyscraper, tallest hotel, or both would prove more taxing.

What physical performance manager, Stephen Schwerdt, says:
“This year it’s a matter of still continuing to train hard, but doing things perhaps a little bit differently to maintain the strong enthusiasm level amongst the players.

While there’s no substitute for doing the hard work, you can do it in a number of different ways, so we’ll try and present some things in a different way.

“We don’t do a huge amount of your traditional conditioning work during the pre-season. We might do one session a week of that and the majority of the pre-season is football work.

“We’re expecting everyone but Trent Hentschel and Nathan Bock to be ready for the start of pre-season. Tyson Edwards [ankle] has started running, so he’s getting back into it now.

“Bocky [Bock] will be a bit slower, he’s been out about two weeks now, so it’ll probably be eight weeks before he’s back into full training.

“Trent [knee] will do some of the drills, but he’ll be a bit restricted because he’s still in the ‘rehab’ phase really. He had his ACL surgery a lot later [than Rhett Biglands], so he’ll be a bit slower.

“We’re still hopeful he’ll be available come some of the pre-season games; that’s the goal he’s got in mind and we think that’s achievable.”

What coach Neil Craig says:
“Next year we need to make sure we refresh the team with some of the younger talent that we’ve got, with the goal of getting back and playing winning football, as well as developing our squad.

“We have enormous commitment to continue to improve our playing list, to improve our win-loss ratio and hence to continue to play finals football.”
