Despite being named in the Eagles team for tomorrow's clash with the Dockers, full forward Scott Cummings won't be playing. He was named on the extended bench on Thursday night, and will be one of the three players omitted. Cummings will play for Swan Districts in the WAFL competition today.
Cummings' eight games for the Eagles this season have produced just fourteen goals. His last AFL match was in Round 14. Replacement Troy Wilson has kicked 31 from fourteen games, but hasn't kicked a goal in the last two.
Neither full forward has really produced the returns the club would have liked liked this year, and much of West Coast's poor season can be attributed to their inability to kick a winning score.
However, Wilson's physical presence will be just as important as his goal kicking when the Eagles take on the pumped-up Dockers tomorrow.
The fact that Wilson was named on the field and Cummings on the bench suggests that Wilson was always the first choice forward, with Cummings only playing if Wilson couldn't. Wilson is perhaps carrying a small injury which may have kept him out.
For 1999 Coleman Medallist Cummings, time may be running out. With the Eagles list likely to be closely scrutinised at the end of their worst ever season, he faces the likelihood of delisting if he doesn't show that he can return to his best form. And after showing a similar trend of a big first year followed by mediocrity at each of his previous AFL clubs (Essendon 1994-96 and Port Adelaide 1997-98), he wouldn't be confident of getting another chance.
Also far from certain to play this weekend are Phil Matera and David Wirrpunda. Matera has missed the last two games with an ankle injury, and would be a handy extra goal scoring option this weekend. Wirrpunda, who was plagued by foot and leg injuries in his first five years before playing every game so far this season, has pulled up sore from last week's win over St Kilda and, with Matera, must prove his fitness today if he is to play.
