I saw this during the Demons game and didn't want to comment because, well it looked weird but it was hard to put into words why.

And it still is.

My seat was in very close proximity to the old coaches box - this is now used by the Richmond Reserves players and coaches to watch the seniors.

So the box was full.

Due to the game being blown apart in the 2nd quarter, out of curiosity, I had a bit of a sticky beak into the box to gauge player reaction.

Then I watched during half time.

What I liked was how well the players and coaching staff seemed to get along.

They watched the game intently and then freely interacted during half time - quite jovial. It almost p1ssed me off given the half time score but I reasoned they are better off being mates that sitting there glumly.

With one exception. Ben Cousins. Had his headphones in for the entire time - including half time and didn't raise his head during the break from his book/footy record.

Now I don't expect him to be matey with everyone (and it was great to see him in the rooms after the Roos game chatting and laughing after match) but gee I hope his performance during the Demons game that is not how he has spent the past 4 weeks with the young fellas.

A bit alienating......but maybe I'm paranoid.

Thoughts anyone?

I don't really care if he is chummy with the players, but he needs to be a leader on the training field. That is what is important.

I think he said on Nova today that he has to have the earphones in, cant do without it. He said he doesn't like listening to the crowd or something and that he can't watch the footy without the commentators.

Maybe that is why he still had them on during the break because he doesn't like the to listen to the crowd.

when I was in the rooms at Freo game, he was involved with plenty of the players, can recall him with Newy, Browny, KJ and others...mate he wants to be out there believe me, he's not interested in all the glitter/publicity that goes with being a player, he just wants to be out in the middle...I bet he's the type of bloke that once is career ends, you'd never see him at a game as a spectator

I wouldn't read to much into it, I imagine it would be super hard being at a new club and not playing. Out on the field is where true mateship is made and I'm sure once cuz gets on the field and starts bleeding with the guys the bond will get stronger.

I think its more concerning that the younger players were carrying on and being jovial and not seeming to care that we were getting smacked by the worst team in the comp?

Cheers Bo, thats good to hear him in the Freo games. Gotta say it though, I doubt there is too glitz about having a chat with your fellow players at half time!!!

On the first point, Adam Thomson, Tyrone Vickery, Jayden Post were all in the box, all making an effort, all first year at the club.
So if they can do it, surely Cuz can.
But based in Bojangles comments, clearly he makes an effort - just not that day.
HOWEVER
I'd be very concerned if other senior players behaved that way, young players look up to these guys and watching a game of footy with them should be an ideal way to share knowledge.

Initially I agreed with you on the second point BUT they all looked both concerned and solemn in the last quarter when we were no chance to win.

My rationale was at half time, they probably thought the game was still there to be won and we might finish over the top so less to be worried about.

If hes not interested in all the glitter/publicity, why have we had to put up with film crews within the playing group, because of a doco for Ben?

After the Kangaroos game, when they showed the vision in the rooms Cousins was having a good chat and a laugh with Rance too.

Don't think there's too much to read into it.

Last year I watched all the games on TV and kept a close eye on the breaks to get a look at the players in the stands and gauge their reactions and how much passion there was at the club.

I gotta say in all his games that Andy Collins was emergency he never wore head phones. He actually rode every bump as the game wore on , right up until the final siren. That is the sign of a true champion.

Congratulations Andy Collins , maybe you can give Cuz a few tips even if he has got a gig with Nova........

He was always pretty upbeat and chatty in the rooms when at WC.
You cant really expect much from him. Hes played at WC for his whole career and is our favorite son then goes to another club. Maybe he just doesnt feel the same.

Ok after re-reading that it sounds like im a troll lol. I dont really know how else to explain it without sounding like an arseh*le trying to put the boot into the RFC.
So please dont take offence to what im trying to say but im guessing most of you can understand what im trying to say and that in these early stages it may be hard for Ben.

He actually said on Nova that he listens to the commentary when watching games. He would have been listening to the review at half time. Not sure who he was listening to maybe Robert Walls who hates him, or someone who would been have getting stuck into Richmond. He would also have been reading the record because he would study anyone that he plays against. Maybe if the others listen to what is said about them instead of mucking around when getting trashed they may become champions like Ben. We all know about party boy Ben. When it comes to preparing or even a watching a game there is no mucking around for him.

It was an I Pod.

The doco is not about glitter. It's about drugs!! Terry Wallace said on Sen after the watching only the first 7 mins that it was very confronting and something that every parent should watch. Why did you have to put up with the film crew? Ben and his first came back would have to be the ending of the doco. Would think that would be a very important part.

I hope for Andys sake you are a woman.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Glitter and drugs are not mutually exclusive arguements.
The glitter comment came from the BJ's post that i originally quoted. And actually it was Glitter/Publicity.
Just because Terry said that it is something every parent should watch doesn't mean that is necessarily something that won't to some degree glamorise the use of drugs.
If it has an anti-drug undertone, then we all have nothing to worry about. If its just about Bennie making a dollar (well, at least Nixon) then the price of the intrusion into the playing group is too high, IMO.

Don't get me wrong, I was for in bringing in Cuz, his work rate in training, preperation and playing was and is 1st rate. But the team is more than 1 man (Richo is more than 1 man :p) so its the teams interest that is the most important.
