Now that the dust has settled on Daisy's departure, my own - previously negative - thoughts on his legacy at the Collingwood Football Club are starting to change. I think that the level of hate and vitriol that has been directed towards him is unfair since he didn't necessarily want to leave the club.

During this interview in Nova FM
when his contract negotiations were in full swing, Daisy clearly states that he has no preference between Bucks or Malthouse as coach, that he wants to be fairly paid and implies that he is willing to accept less than his value on the open market to remain with the club.

It seems clear now that the Club wanted to let him go in order to secure early picks in this years draft.

Sure he has to talk up his commitment to the Blues to justify the huge paypacket he is getting over there but is that such a huge crime considering what he has given to our great Club? Let us reflect again on this great moment in Collingwood history
and give Daisy a break!

I don't agree with that at all.

Walsh was always saying that he wanted Daisy to stay and thought he would.

And there's no reason to think that the club would not have signed him for the right price.

Daisy was a champion, to be sure. But he's barely played a decent game in 18 months. He's injured his ankle three times. To pay $700K per year out of the salary cap for four years for such a player is madness.

We would have been insane to even go within a ballpark of that, let alone match it. And pick 11 just made the decision obvious.

And Daisy would have been pretty nuts himself to knock back that kind of deal from Carlton.

Great decision by the club with the right mentality. This will be a huge WIN for the PIES in the long term. The scum are still stuck in the 70's where buying proven quality was meant to get you the ultimate glory. We have moved on and the only way to the premiership is THE DRAFT. With a few top up's along the way, we will be tasting the champagne from the premiership cup long before Daisy will with the scum. Oh and BTW I will not cut Thomas any slack until he retires from THE SCUM!

Not sure he left any great legacy as the OP title suggests. He was integral member of our premiership team, but hardly played a decent game in 2 years when he was getting great coin from the pies and gave not much on the field in return. He was entitled to try his luck on the open market and if Carlton was stupid enough to pay $700k a year then good lick to him. But it was his choice to leave and play for the scum.

He will always be respected for his role in the 2010 Premiership, but in my mind he greatly tarnished his reputation.

Your contention is bollocks, and reliant on what were IMHO self serving remarks from Daisy made with the intent of preserving his legacy and by extension is money earning capacity in the media.

Next you will be taking Kevin Rudd at face value.

In reality, he had mentally checked out a long time ago.

The only legacy he has left is that the club has hopefully had enough of drawn out contract negotiations from selfish players, and going forward we offer all players the most we can within the constraints of our salary cap in terms of building a team of 22 very good players on decent coin not 3 stars on massive coin and the rest none. If you don't like it then play in the two's for the rest of the year and leave.

I really liked the fact we downgraded Thomas' offer after he dicked us around all year.

Credit to guys like Dayne Beams who sign a contract extension without fuss, despite being worth much more on the open market and having plenty of interest.

How? By being injured?

Injury has nothing to do with it. He had the opportunity to be a Collingwood player for life, but chose to leave for money. The club offered him A deal which by reports was fair, reflecting his worth and future injury risk, by making the deal conditional. Many current players have chosen to take unders at their present club just to stay and be a 1 club player.

Daisy chose money over everything else, and good luck to him. But do I now think of him as fondly as other players who have contributed to the success of the club. Hell no.

And Jesse White and Patrick Karnezis, how do you feel about them?

Not sure what relevance they have to this thread, but I hope they make the most of their opportunity...something their old clubs did not provide thus them moving on.

He's still plastered on my walls with all the other Collingwood teams that I'm proudest of.

I have the champions of 2002. who nearly got us over the line in the gutsiest game of footy ever, the 2005 team to remind where we'd come from, the 2007 where we nearly beat the greatest team of all time and the 2010 warriors that eventually landed the first flag in my lifetime.

I agree with that 100% Pete! I think my main point is that Daisy doesn't deserve to be hated by Collingwood supporters.

This was his last go at a big contract and Carlton offered him one and we didn't , don't hate the player.....

Exactly. I suspect that the hate being directed towards Daisy is born out of fear. Fear that he will regain his fitness and form and use it to hurt us. Fear that he and Malthouse will re-unite and win a flag for the Blues.

I seriously doubt that anyone within the inner sanctum of the Collingwood Football Club shares these fears.

People may fear that Daisy might get back to his best but surely no one fears Carlton winning a premiership. Outrageous call.

Don't know if it has been raised or not, but why is an interview from 2011 being used as justification for a softening stance on the situation with Daisy??? You can tell that the interview was from well before 2012 by the hair

So where the clip is titled "Collingwood struggling to find money for Dale Thomas" it is from an interview midway during the 2011 season when Kim Hagdorn went early on his re-signing with us. The discussion re MM v Bucks was in regard to the handover.

The fact that he mentions that Adidas and Lexus are sponsors should have been proof enough lol.

I don't hate Daisy, but I don't like the way he's conducted himself over the last year, and going to Carlton obviously doesn't help. In saying that he's never been a favourite player of mine so I don't have much emotional attachment to what he does. Someone like Shaw I always enjoyed watching on and off the field and will be hoping he does well at GWS.

And Jesse White and Patrick Karnezis, how do you feel about them?

And Luke Ball and Nathan Buckley. And Paul Licuria.

I think people are for some reason offended and take Daisy's move quite personally, when he is only doing what so many players before him have done (including from our own club).

People need to learn to deal with this a little better, or they will be continually fustrated...

Heath Shaw was lauded as a hero when he decided he wanted to leave to GWS to reignite his career... Daisy was crucified for making a similar decision, but just to another club.

Shaw was traded by the club and wanted to stay, Daisy sought out FA, so no, it's not similar.

there's a little bit of double standards happening here (which happens at all clubs).
We're happy to celebrate the arrival of White, Karnezis etc and before that Lynch, Young, Ball, Jolly, right back to Bucks, and A Rocca.

Yes, Daisy's contract negotiations were protracted and distracting but how was that different to T Cloke? This was Daisy's last ticket to financial security and if Carlton were stupid enough to pay him $700k, good luck to him.
We certainly did better than the Hawks did with Buddy so I won't be complaining. Of course until Daisy retires I will hate him but when that time comes, he will be remembered as having played a huge role in one of our earlier flags.
