AFL Club
Collingwood
They are talking about this on SEN who wins or loses at the end of the year. For me it is not a simple as how Daisy goes for Carlton, if he has a good year and wins Carlton's BnF but with our compensation pick for Thomas (pick 11) we managed to trade for pick 6 and Jesse White. If White has a good year and Scharenberg comes back and plays well after he returns from injury then I think the deal is a win win.

still got nothing to do with Thomas, carlton gave nothing up for him.
It does have to do with Thomas as Collingwood would has assessed their options, when they had the three day period to match the offer or not they would have looked at what they could do with the pick if he left. They made the choice they did because it was in the best interest of the club to let Dale go.

What was the opportunity cost? Using pick 100 in the National Draft?

It's very similar to Collingwood's drafting of Ball, just that Carlton didn't have to use a pick on him. I think Collingwood have been able to recover ground via trading and compensation, but the fact that Carlton got him for no exchange of picks or players is a clear win to me. He's an injury risk, but many players are, and Carlton would rather spend the money on Thomas than a bunch of filler players. Oh and Betts was asking for a bunch of money which they weren't willing to spend on, Thomas became the better alternative.

I think both clubs will win, but Carlton will win more, which is not surprising really.

Oh dear, I fear this won't end well. IMO, Carlton will be a winner if Daisy plays well for the best part of 4 years. If he does not then $700k pa plus the reputation of the coach will have proven to be a fairly large price to pay. Collingwood are already the winner in removing a player who didn't want to be at the club and picking up reasonable players as replacement.

The cost is the amount of money that he is on and if he fails to get his body right, it will be a waste of cap space

What if White maintains his dud status? What if Scharenberg struggles to find a position at AFL level, or struggles with foot problems? What if the picks you gave up turn out to be better than the picks you received?

Exacttly!! And what does any of that have to do with Carlton!!!

Yeah, there's two separate deals here, Thomas' free agency, and the trades Collingwood did with the subsequent compensation picks. I think the op is asking if Collingwood/Carlton are better off with not having/having Thomas on the list. I'd say Carlton won it's free agency deal than Collingwood won it's trade, but again, that doesn't surprise me. It's harder to fail at a free agency deal than a trade because you don't give up anything. But Collingwood did well out of the trade period and handled the Thomas issue well IMO. As for the "wasted cap" argument, both clubs have to fill their cap paying players, and Scharenberg and White will be paid a salary too.

Then I think we would have lost the deal. In the original post it refers to the best case scenario for both clubs. Yes Scharenberg has his foot problem now but I think the fact that we also picked up White helps reduce the risk of it being a failure.

But together they will be on less then Daisy. I think part of the decision to let him go was to free up room so we could hold on to players like Beams and Reid.

Collingwood got adequate compensation for Thomas. Its a win for Collingwood because (a) this is the last year that we will get compo and (b) we got more than Hawthorn did for Buddy. What we do with the compo pick and spare salary cap is in the hands of the football Gods.

Whether Thomas succeeds or not at Carlton is a seperate matter (as is his pay packet). Hes a gun player so likely he'll be a decent pickup.

This! If you move on a player who wants more than you think he's worth you pretty much have a win right there. The fact that you get compensation is bonus and the compensation we got has the potential to add significantly to the side. Carlton on the other hand will want to justify $700k per year for the term of the contract. If Daisy stays fit then that's probably a no-brainer and their gamble will have paid off. If he doesn't then you can bet there will be some soul searching.

Seeings that the deal to get Scharenberg wouldn't of been possible with out Thomas leaving that is how it is connected to Carlton.

You could just as easily say its connected to Port after they beat us in the finals and bumped us up the draft list. Its a nonsense. There was no deal. Pick 6 was very good compo.

Carlton paid $750,000 a year over 4 years for Daisy. To win they would need Daisy to perform at the level of an actual 750k a year player (Cotchin, Dangerfield, Watson, etc) for 4 years or they would need to win a flag with him playing a big role in it.

The only way Collingwood can win the deal is if their replacement draft picks ends up being better than Daisy.

To be honest I didn't want him at Carlton, could have had a good talented young kid with that compo pic we lost for him and I think we are paying him a bit too much. But let's see what happens this season, hopefully he can find some form and have a good year for us, God knows we need some talent at Carlton.
