Height: 200cm
Weight: 88kg
DOB: 02/06/92
Club: Norwood (SA)

Kevin Sheehan says: Gorringe was the standout in terms of performance across the U18s carnival. He showed himself to be a thinking ruckman, able to overcome his marginal lack of height (198cm) by leaping high and early and working on angles, and he slotted the ball down a teammate's throat more often than any other big man.

In his own words
What type of player are you?
I'm a skilful, athletic, hard-working ruckman with a rover's mentality.

Which AFL player do you feel you resemble and why?
I resemble Patrick Ryder and Nic Naitanui due to my ability to execute skills successfully, quickness, finish around goals, and take a contested pack mark.

What are your strengths as a footballer?
Skills, speed, ground work for my size, athletic, versatility, composure, can finish around goals, creative, ability to run and carry, awareness, leadership.

What parts of your game would you like to improve?
Strength, left-foot kicking, positioning around to get to more dangerous spots more often.

Which AFL team do you support and how did you come to barrack for them?
Hawthorn. Lance Franklin made me watch them because of his style of exciting play and now I just enjoy the way the club goes about their footy.

Who has been the biggest influence on your career so far, and why?
Nathan Basset. The time he has spent with me improving me as a footballer has been amazing. He believed in me and my potential.

South Australian Daniel Gorringe is a mobile ruckman blessed with fantastic ball-winning skills.

He was taken by the GC SUNS at Pick 10 at the 2010 National Draft.

Widely considered one of the best performed players at the 2010 National Championships, Gorringe, showed tremendous nous and deft touch in ruck contests against bigger opponents and proved himself a terrific disposer of the ball around the ground.

His goal-kicking is also a hallmark.

After an injury-interrupted season in 2011, Gorringe has had a strong pre-season, completing every training session, adding considerable muscle & snagging 3 goals in the final pre-season match against the Swans. He should be in the Suns’ line-up as a ruckman/forward for round 1.

Gorringe's performance in Round 1 brings to mind the old saying, "built like Tarzan, played like Jane". Dan was shifted all over the place - forward, back & ruck, but only managed 1 kick, 2 marks & 7 handballs. I'm sure he's capable of a lot better than this.

Gorringe has now had an operation on his achilles tendon & is still listed as being out indefinitely.

respectfully disagree, bballscout. dan hasn't shown his full potential, don't think of his trade worth due to his harsh run with injury.

I rate him. Just saying with our big man depth and his potential, could be worth getting value out of him with a trade and he gets more opportunity elsewhere.

I think Dan has enormous potential. He just turned 20 this month, is strong, athletic & 200cm tall. He hasn't done much yet, but time is on his side. He has a huge leap. He virtually stood on top of a pack to take a grab against the Bulldogs last year. I certainly wouldn't be offering to trade him. He could develop into a very useful ruck or key position player.

I've kept an eye out for Gorringe for a while now. Hope he gets a good run at the season and starts to produce, was great before he was drafted and I think he will surprise the comp if he gets to show his potential.

I hope Gorringe does well in 2013, it seems to have taken him a while to make the step up to playing with men but as he is a tall a bit of patience is required.

Gorringe has strung together games against Brisbane, North & Sydney in the 2013 NAB Cup. He looked all at sea in the first match, which is understandable, considering how long he has been out of footy & how little experience he really has at the top level. He has improved steadily over the last 3 weeks, but still hasn't cemented his place in our best 22 for the home & away season. He needs to work on his 2nd efforts.

Suns' showdown for ruck hopefuls.
While most positions have been decided on for the club's round 1 clash in a fortnight, ruck is still up for grabs.

Charlie Dixon and Zac Smith currently lead the charge and Gold Coast football manager Marcus Ashcroft said both players had pressed their claims this pre-season. But Ashcroft warned the race for the main ruck spot was not simply a two-horse war.

"I wouldn't rule out Dan Gorringe either," Ashcroft said. "He played some good minutes in the ruck last week and showed he has got some footy smarts.

Aaah I see. Different leagues and such though?

Anyway, the NEAFL stats aren't released publicly unfortunately!

That's ridiculous in today's day and age!

Yes, seperate competitions but numbers are numbers and give us some data to measure.

Cheers
