Even his game against the Crows wasn’t bad unless you’re purely judging it on hitouts. Had more marks, clearances and disposals than both Crows rucks combined.
It’s really only centre ball up with the new rules that don’t suit DC. He’s still arguably the best marking ruck in the competition. Hitouts to advantage at centre stoppage has never been his game

He's playing well. He's become a very good very consistent player. But is going to lose a lot more taps, as he can't jump - however don't be surprised if the non-jumpers like him up their clearances even further from the pretty good numbers they were already getting - as the jumpers now need more time to recover to get back into the contest. It's going to be interesting to see how it plays out over the course of the year once teams have adjusted to the new rules.

But the Crows smashed us out of the middle?

Steene should be taking the majority of the centre bounces.

Cameron is great around the ground. But he's a liability in the key area that we absolutely suck - the centre. Apart from Naicos we stink.

We are last in the league in centre clearances and last in first possession and then 3rd last in tackles.

So the opposition are getting the ball and keeping it as we aren't able to stop them.

Exactly.

Which makes letting go of Mitchell and interesting decision. Mitchell is the one that changed our clearance game.

Mitchell was not the answer. I wanted him to return from injury and impact in the seniors. And 17. On return he was selected for a few senior matches and returned to the VFL side. 😢. The game has sped up. We need the next solution. At the time Steele from the Saints appealed to me, but didn’t appeal to others. Maybe the Mitchell decision is not the interesting part, the interesting part is what is next for that role.

I would like to see Fly mix things up more during games. He seems to be a bit slow at making moves when the usual plan/match-ups are not working. Cameron could be a good CHB/CHF imo (while youngsters like Cochran continue to develop). Dare I suggest a 'Leigh Brown', who was only a year younger at the same stage of his career as swingman. Five on the bench offers greater flexibility to try
Why not try it if things are getting ugly at some stage?

Cameron stats:
Average contested mark across his career nearly two per game (1.7) and intercept marks 2.4 (2024) and 2.8 (2025). His average int marks are on a par with Howe and Moore, albeit he isn't having be mindful of a direct opponent like a backman has to, and cherry-picking stats can be misleading.

However, the one worrying stat so far this year, bearing in mind it is early days, is hitouts to advantage
(4 2026, 8 2025, 8 2024). I used to think centre hitouts to adv were overrated but the new ruck rule is going to see the ruckmen who have a good leap on them palm it straight into the hands of a midfielder, as opposed to the general direction. A good example is the first centre ball-up v Brisbane. It was a perfect palm to Ashcroft.
I think this aspect is going to become more important than it has ever been. Look at Steene v GWS.

Just my thoughts

I think we've seen other players affected by rule changes in the past, Micky Gayfer for one, Jimmy Clement another and of course Dane Swan when the interchange rules changed but poor old Darcy Cameron just had a career best season and then has to contend with something that has the potential to end his career prematurely. Gawn seems to have found a way to still kick on without having to jump too high in centre bounces, Darcy this week is another that is more of a body ruckman, but it's already been the demise of RO'B at Adelaide, Briggs at GWS and Rowan Marshall.

Then there are the injuries to Nank at Richmond and Tim English....it'll only take a couple more MCL's and PCL's to have the AFL reviewing the ruck laws again.

Only on here to see what to do with Darcy Cameron for my fantasy draft team...

But this is such a big key point - I'm surprised it's not been discussed more.

The AFL has completely changed the value of a bunch of players, and you have clubs like Adelaide who just gave ROB a long term contract before the rules changed. Now they're stuck with an ineffective ruck for the next however many years. Players careers have suddenly been cut short as well. I'd be surprised if someone doesn't at least think about taking this to court.
