Cats axe assistant coaches

The fall-out from Geelong’s poor season has begun, with the axing of assistant coaches Alan McConnell and Norm Dare.

The Cats fell well short of their own pre-season expectations and were never in contention for a finals berth, after a dismal start to the year that left them with only one win from their first eight games.

Geelong finished the year in 12th position with only seven wins and a draw.

With senior coach Mark Thompson only having one year remaining on his contract, the performance of the Cats next year is bound to determine his own future at the club.

But Thompson has seen fit to re-shape his football department now, in an attempt to push Geelong up the ladder next year.

McConnell first joined Geelong as an assistant coach to Gary Ayres in 1997, after a similar stint at Fitzroy, where he also took over as a caretaker senior coach on two occasions.

After playing 37 games with Footscray in the early 1980s, he worked his way through the coaching ranks at suburban level, before first moving into AFL circles as Fitzroy’s under-19 coach.

Dare was brought to Geelong by Thompson in 2001 after the pair worked together as assistant coaches at the Kangaroos in 1999.

The former Fitzroy winger, who played 72 games with the Lions in the late 1960s and early 70s, spent several years as an assistant coach under Denis Pagan at North Melbourne, following a coaching career in Queensland.

Dare was the senior coach of the Brisbane Bears in 1990 and also served the club as an assistant.

Both McConnell and Dare will finish their associations with Geelong when their contracts expire on 31 October.

The club will advertise nationally for their replacements.

Good riddance
It had to happen, especially Norm Dare, (forward line coach) after we managed to kick 100 points or more just 3 times this year.

I wonder who will replace them.

Excellent news, has already been rather thoroughly discussed on Cats Claw, though.

Hopefully O'Donnell, Blakey or Bews will be added to the rankings, all 3 of them ooze quality IMO.

Wouldn't mind Choco Royal, although our main target is Gary O'Donnell.

Yep,

Good thinking Cat fans. Obviously has a good rapore with Thompson, and has been involved with Premierships as both a player and assistant coach.

I wonder what the story was with Royal? Literally, he was on everyone's hitlist for a senior coaching position a year or two ago, but seems to have been dumped for reasons that escape me. Perhaps Melbourne applied the fresh blood logic :)

Getting them could well be an idea?

I'd like to see you nab a coach with experience, who's actually done relatively well, with an untried one.

Eade and O'Donnell garner up any interest?

What about hiring one of our past players to take on a coaching role?? If we went down this track, Bews, Hinkley or Hocking would have to be considered, surely.

I wouldn't mind the club having a quiet talk to Paul Lynch or Barry Stoneham.

Paul Lynch... now there was a footballer who was every bit as good as Mark Mercuri was in his prime, the only problem was whenever he started to reach that level, he'd get injured.

New Assistant Coaches

Who do you think will replace Norm Dare and Alan McConnell??
Hocking has said that he is interested and president Frank Costa said he expected the club would favour players not long out of the game
``They'll be looking for fellows who aren't too long out of football, who are right up there with what's happening today and who have some experience in coaching to bring some fresh thinking to the club''

There's already a topic about this.Check the one below.
And just as the Brisbane Bears and Fitzroy Lions did back in 1996, two becomes one. :D

I would love to see Buddha given a chance to work with our midfielders in a coaching role next year.

Pretty rich to blame the assistant coaches.

Thommo must be on borrowed time

If he is replaced next year and the new coach wants his own assistants you could have to replace them again in twelve months.

I agree.

If Mark Thompson doesn't start producing results with the talent he has at his disposal next year, he'll be out and one of the assistant coaches will be promoted.

Next year will be Mark Thompson's 5th year as senior coach.

Paul Lynch is starring for Lara and he's also the coach [premiers last year].

See, that's what I'm talking about. Lynch as a player for Geelong was a hardworking forward with a sense for the goals. As a coach, he has had some success and is a proven performer at that level at least. He'd make a great forward coach, if we can lure him away from Lara.

Ken Hinkley springs to mind. He's in his second year at Bell Park, and has only had success there. This week they play off in the Prelim Final, so if he could win them a GFL Premiership this year, then he should be seriously looked at.

He's another player who played at Geelong in our prime, and has had previous coaching experience under Malcolm Blight at St. Kilda.

Also a member of the K-Rock footy team and gives a pretty good special analysis of the game when he calls.
