i was at the game in darwin last night. and i hope that the team gets a light week on the training track as the heat would have knocked the lads around, most of the breaks during the game the lads were in a cold room. a few observations from the game.... miller was impressive due to great service from the midfield and so was bennel. watts was scully like with his hands. wonna was definitely short of a run , but did some magical things . the importance of the theme of the round [dreamtime] seemed to inspire all the indigenous players and they were spurred on by a very vocal tiwi islander crowd. great to see so many locals wearing demon colours

Was it really muggy and humid? Looked pretty greasy, almost like the game against the dogs.

Interesting that we played so well in slippery conditions on both occassions. I wonder if it has anything to do with bringing the oppositions skill level down and highlighting our tackling and intensity..

it was extremly muggy around the 30 deg mark with a lot of rain on the 2 days leading up to the match. even though it didn,t rain on the night it was just humid and hot up till i left the ground around 11pm

Surely in the future the AFL must give competing teams who play in Darwin sufficient recovery for the next weeks game, why our game against Geelong is'nt on Sunday puzzles me?

You better believe it - the weather up here has been ridiculous. It was still wet season heat/conditions on Friday night - hand fans were the go where I was sitting. Just for instance the overnight minimum last night was 25.9 degrees!!!!

this return to the wet has been most unwelcome!

one question.

why weren't Melbourne using the interchange area they were assigned? the damn thing is air conditioned. yet they sit on the boundary near the interchange gate.

also having played in Darwin, maybe the AFL teams should import some local knowledge when dealing with heat. Iced water in buckets with towels etc applied to the neck, head and torso. give the water carriers and trainers said buckets and let them run out with a least the towels to cool the players on the deck. esp if they go down with an injury or even if you go out to give them a drink.

and

30 - 40 minute warm ups. really? we had an AIS doctor come when i was playing, we were warming up and he was "WTF are you doing?" we're like "warming up". His response was telling - "If you're not warm in this heat you're dead. loosen up, stretch, lightly warm up but stop what you are doing" what works at 12C in Melbourne is not necessarily the best thing in 30C and 80% humidity.

i think they were using the chairs near the boundary to allow quicker rotations. both teams did it this year - last year they used the aircon.

both teams had cold towels on the bench too, it's jsut that afl players only spend a few minutes on the pine (or plastic chair).

The recovery from the game is definately going to hurt us against Geelong, the AFL could have at least given us an 8 day break.

Bails has said the Dees are going to ask for the Darwin game to come before the break next time - so that both teams involved have plenty of chance to recover.
