Well don't say you haven't been warned...

And isn't it nice to see an original idea on Australian TV.
Sounds a bit like the ABC's Strictly Dancing but when you start to involve celebrities it could get ugly.

Seven woos Somers
By Robert Fidgeon
August 25, 2004

LONG-TIME Nine Network superstar Daryl Somers is set to sign a deal that will take him to Channel 7.
Somers has not been seen on Australian screens since November, 1999, following Nine's axing after a 28-year run of his national show Hey Hey It's Saturday.

Somers will host a dance/variety series, based on the hit UK television series Strictly Come Dancing.

The show features celebrities partnering professional dancers for a competition that results in couples being eliminated as the series progresses.

The series, which will be filmed at Seven's South Melbourne studios, will be produced by Granada Productions.

The snaring of Somers is a coup for Seven and the channel's Melbourne boss, Ian Johnson, who has aggressively wooed Nine on-camera stars.

Somers's Hey Hey sidekick Molly Meldrum jumped networks earlier this year, as did former Postcards host Geoff Cox.

His Postcards colleague Steve Oemcke also left Nine to host Seven's Wheel of Fortune.

The shock move puts in doubt the proposed return of Sale of the Century, which Somers was to host.

The success of repeats of Frasier, of which Nine still has two unscreened series, make it unlikely Sale will be seen this year.

Sounds crap.

But I grew up on Darryl and Ossie on Saturday mornings.. I still have a vinyl record from about '76 which has Darryl with a huge fro and Ossie.. well he never aged a day.

Still think Ch 9 should've kept hey hey on.. Nothing even similar anymore, and even if it was ordinary alot of the time.. It was better than anything else at 18:30 since.

Damn...I was hoping you meant Darryl EASTLAKE. Anyone to replace that dipsh#t Tony Squires at the Olympics desk...

How is Somers "on-camera talent"? He has not been on camera lately (court appearances aside), and his 'talent' regularly saw him upstaged by a head on a stick. Ditto MollyHACK!Meldrum.

I really miss Hey Hey It's Saturday! :(

I do too in a strange way. The sad thing is that shows like it can't be done now. They all have to be so slick now. People tend to try too hard to be spontaneous and it just doesn't work.

I just don't feel the good vibe of this new idea but I shouldn't rubbish something before it's started should I. :D

Agree. I enjoyed that show.......great entertainment and loved the musical acts who came on to perform. Sadly Rove's attempt to copy it is embarassing.

Someone must like it; he keeps winning Logies, the most credible of awards now that the People's Choice has gone.

I think it is a good get for Seven but the show sounds crap. Really, how many people do they expect to watch a dancing show?

I may be wrong but it seems like a waste to put him on a show like that.

It's gotta be a pîss-take.

when you see phrases such as "superstar Daryl Somers" and "snaring of Somers is a coup for Seven", then you know April 1st has come early or the TV industry is very sick indeed.

Somers was a great entertainer in his day, but his only recent gigs have been at the presidents lunch down cat-park way.

Bit more info about the show. And yes, it sounds bad. Really bad. Even for Seven.

PAULINE Hanson is back on the campaign trail.

This time, however, she is not trying to win a political seat - not at this moment anyway.
Rather she is campaigning to win viewers' favour on Channel 7's celebrity dancing competition Strictly Come Dancing.

The show, to be hosted by Daryl Somers and Sonia Kruger, will feature well-known faces including Katrina Warren, Bec Cartwright, Justin Melvey, John Wood, and Matt Shirvington, who are paired with professional dancers. Viewers get to vote off a couple each week.

A determined Hanson started lessons with her dance partner Salvatore Becchio last week. She has 10 dance routines to master in six weeks, before the show goes live to air on October 10.

"I certainly don't want to make a fool of myself on the dance floor, although some people would already say I have made a fool of myself in my political career," Hanson said.

"I am going in this to win. The rest of the celebrities can expect real competition from us. If they think I am going to be a walkover, they have got another think coming."
