I am an absolute beginner with trying to build a database,
i was wondering how complexed it is to build a database extracting results, times, track condition ETC...

download mysql
http://www.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/

use the msi installer. easier and quicker.

and work through the w3schools tutorials
http://www.w3schools.com/sql/default.asp

it's not hard but at the same time you need a reasonably analytical mind

i've never downloaded mysql directly like that so i'm not sure what the user interface is like.

if it's a bit tricky to work out this is easy;
http://www.wampserver.com/en/

the only reason i didn't recommend this first is because it comes bundled with plenty of other stuff (apache server, installs php etc,.) that you may not want (but you might also want it i don't know).

you need to run wamp server, and then open a browser and go to localhost/phpmyadmin and that is the UI i'm more familiar for using mysql. phpmyadmin may come bundled with the first download i'm not sure. phpmyadmin is fairly intuitive and there are plenty of tutorials.

in other words, it's complicated ;)
Especially if you are trying to make it available online

Of course, depends on exactly what you are trying to do. I use to keep all my cricket scores / bowling averages in a very simple database that I used to just update weekly and have all that stuff worked out for me .. but then, I was only 16 so it had to be pretty simple!

it is a little at first but once you get to using the more and setting them up it becomes easier. much like anything really.

it depends on how interested you are in handling data. some people are, some people aren't. SQL can be quite frustrating cause it can be a bit cumbersome and JOINS will leave a lot of beginners confused.

though the good thing about the way computer languages are handled these days it is much more a logical process rather than a formulatic mathematical process as it was 15+ years ago.

any question's just throw them in. a great place in stackoverflow.com - as a beginner, i would say it's almost impossible to not find the answer to a problem there.

Why do you need a DB for this? Could you not use spreadsheets?

Since you're just beginning and mentioned "extracting" data it doesn't appear your data needs are going to be too large or complex... so why the need for a DB?

Perhaps start off by using spreadsheets to store the data (you can still extract the information from them) and build up your knowledge and skills from there. Spreadsheets are much easier for your to create and manage visually while you build you understanding of how your data relates to itself.

Then if you still need a DB in the future you can easily create a batch of DB tables based on your spreadsheets and easily import your data into the DB.

But it all depends on what you want to do with the data?

Building a database - properly, so that it does what you need it to do - isn't something you pick up in a day or even a week. It's why Access is no longer part of the basic Microsoft Office package - too much of a learning curve unless you're committed. A spreadsheet is a better bet if you're after quick results, though it wields proportionately less power.

If you want to invest the time, I recommend SQL Server as
- a perfectly decent version can be downloaded for free and contains sample databases to practice on
- it's a purist's platform and forces you to understand what you're doing in order to get results
- it is widely used in business and the skills learned will be transferable in a professional setting.

If the database is only for personal use, Access is easier to learn, with the help of a Dummies guide or Microsoft's Step By Step books. It's more GUI-based than some, resulting in a tendency to remember actions as opposed to learning the commands at a more basic level.

But undertaking it lightly is likely to lead to frustration.
