Time for a positive thread. Flogging the big names. Keep it up Dave.

How was his chase in the forward like against the hawk speedster!, forgot the hawks name who ended up squaring the ball to rioli. It showed me by that chase that he is starting to gain his speed back.

Also tigs, did groupie give you permission to use her/his giff from the logies last night ?

Me and Groupie_ are the same person

It was Brad Hill I think.

Said last year he could be our long term replacement for Chaplin but he definitely seems to have found a niche as a lockdown KPD. While his offensive game could use a bit of work, when Rance comes back, I don't think it will be such a concern. Rance is a great rebounding defender and the 2 could compliment each other quite well (as Rance can struggle a bit with the monster KPFs).

Problem is he is average offensively. If he can improve that he will be the player we felt he could be in his first season.

I tend to agree, but this only really hurts while Rance is out. I can see a place for solid, boring Dave sitting down back and primarily negating, if we have a few more players running to give an option. Rance is great at this. Grimes needs to learn to do it better. Chaplin might feel some pressure on his spot in the 22 if he can't do more of it.

With better structures he'd be a better offensive player. From the outside we dont seem to have predictable systems in place to move the ball, we stop and wait for an option rather putting the ball to where the player should be running to. True of every sport that good teams are predictable to each other while poor teams are usually playing as individuals.

Astbury has been great, buy judging by Grimes reaction when asked about him in the post match interview, I get the impression he was expecting astbury to be dropped for rance coming in. If Grimes and Chaplin kept their place ahead of astbury it would be a travesty.

Not only a travesty; but also have me starting to seriously question is there is a bit of a click going on down at the club.

Maybe Grimes just doesn't realised he's about to get the arse. Can't wait to see Astbury/Rance combo.

Won't happen. Astbury has gone past Chaplin. Grimes is better suited to a smaller forward but can play on players like Gunston / Tex Walker. Chaplin's place in the side is on shaky grounds.

Once Astbury develops his offensive game, he will be a very good player that is more like Rance, but he keeps his feet. All I ask of Astbury is that he stays fit. He is regularly beating his opponents (other than Brown).

Sorry Tigs, I recon Grimes has been good defensively. Like the rest of the team his confidence is shot, but the last 2 weeks he's been more than sound as a defender and beat his opponent. And yesterday, their were times that look like the Grimes of old who was actually a decent rebounder for us.

I'll personally be upset if he is dropped.

Agree. Chaplin should be the one dropped but got a bad feeling it will be Grimes. Chaplin has been rubbish but we seem to love playing these guys that we recruit from other clubs no matter what. Astbury/Rance combo with Grimes 3rd tall is the makings of a good defence. Grimes as a 3rd tall needs to build his confidence in his rebounding game though otherwise I think Darrou could go past him if given a chance.

Exactly my thoughts mate. However I just cannot see them having the balls to drop Chaplin.

If you read my post in the preview thread, I explain my ins and outs.

I have all 4 of Astbury, Rance, Grimes and Chaplin playing.

Can you see that working?

I doubt it. Mainly because Chaplin now moves slower than my grandma and currently Grimes doesn't offer enough rebound, Chaplin offers no rebound and Astbury offers rebound some weeks and not others. Our smalls are giving us little rebound either. Fingers crossed it's bye bye Chappy. Show off some leadership in the ressies.

Glad to have been proven wrong at this stage about Astbury, after last season was starting to doubt he could ever start to show some of the signs he gave us in season 1. Between injuries and low confidence was beginning to worry he was going to be another promising player that never delivered. However yes with some of the baffling team decisions this season I wouldn't be shocked if he gets dropped to make way for Rance with "experience and mature bodies" being the excuse.

If astbury gets dropped this week I won't watch another richmond game for the year! I would also loose all faith in Damien hardwick!
Has been the most improved player at the club quite comfortably! Griff has shown a lot of promise but still needs to increase his influence on the game in terms of his possessions and hitting the scoreboard for me!
Loved seeing Daves hard chase on brad hill! Quicker then what people think, he seems to be the type of person that goes Up an extra gear or two when he's chasing someone!
I think they'll drop grimes, Chaplin from what players such as rance say about him, I believe his experience and leadership is to valuable to loose at this stage!

I think he is kidding himself.

With another 1 or 2 preseasons he will get his speed of the mark back, as well as assisting with the improvement in his 3k time trialling.

Unless I'm making this up, once upon a time Grimes was a fantastic rebounder. I'll never forget a run he made from the back pocket into our F50 against Port many years ago. I thought i saw signs of this last Sunday!

See, if it's too work, this is how I see it:

Astbury - to take the monster forward
Chaplin - to take the next best/biggest
Rance - a running BP/HB to take the 3rd tall (can be called upon if Astbury/Chaplin getting killed) because he can certainly run.
Grimes - to take Petterd's spot on the HB flank.

Unfortunately I'm with you, I cannot see them dropping Chaplin. The reason for this is because they are trying to save face and not look like gooses for dropping one of the boys that went hard at in FA.

Sometimes you just have to swallow your pride.

Astbury is a great advertisement for recruiting youth.

He had talent, but more importantly, given his age, he had time and range to develop and improve. Astbury may only be a C-Grader. He may become a B or eventually become an A-Grader. But with Astbury , like others as in Griff we have a guy, developed at the club that can give us consistent imput for many years yet allowing us time to develop our list to win a premiership!:thumbsu:

Astbury is a great advertisement for the importance of persistence and each importantly playing their role and growing as we improve on our journey!

Astbury is an example, recruited in the draft compared to the Chaplain trade, given the player ages and comparable performances, with Astbury having more years ahead of him and far more range for upside, why Astbury as a drafted player is far more valuable for the RFC into the future than a recycled trade!
