Watched the VFL final today and Davenport was just great again... his skills are considerably better than they were last year..

He will definately get a regular AFL game next year as he has that ability to run the lines and kick goals...

imo, we should trade Prismall and promote this guy. Prismall is pedestrian and very ordinary today in the VFL. Prismall would attract a first rd pick which we could package up with Tenace to get a Top 5 pick or Robertson from Melbourne. Prismal simply cant get a game in front of Ling, Bartel, Corey, Enright, Milburn, Rooke, Selwood etc (whom he is most like) and has too much ability and currency to waste, even though he was poor today. He isn't as good or as versatile and is too slow to play the role of a Stokes, Byrnes, Varcoe, Wojinski or Tenace.

We have nothing to lose and everything to gain by packaging him up. If we win a flag we will need to continue to evole our list by reinventing ourselves. Davenport, Hawkins, 'D'jerka, Grima, Rooke and a Robertson or Top 5 draft pick (med forward), would be good additions to the '08 team mix. I simply can't see Prismall cracking a game or adding value. Geelong should make the tough decision here to build a dynasty.

Na sorry. Would still keep Prismall, his just came back from injury. Prismall is one of my favo young players. cant wait to se him in bout 3-4 years in his prime...

we will not win back to back flags (big assumption here of course) without reinventing our team and a 2nd matchwinning half forward such as Robertson would be needed and perfect.... Prismall will be a great player but is our 8th best accumulating midfielder (10th if you add Hunt and Mackie to this) and to get a player like Robertson or a top 5 draft pick (if there is any top forwards in the draft)

to keep ahead of the opposition we need:

Midfield
- Rooke to be fit and enter the midfield mix
- Selwood to step up to elite class
- Davenport to join the midfield mix, replacing Byrnes or Tenace

Forwards
- a second Johnson like matchbreaking midsized forward
- Nablett to get over his hip injury and get some mongrel into him
- Tomahawk to get fit !!

Backs
- Hunt to build his aerobic capacity
- Mackie to bulk up to win more contested ball

X factor
- 'D'jerka to have a good preseason and injury free season...will push Varcoe out of the team and put great pressure on him to improve..

Prismall just wouldn't factor into what we need but he could help us get that 2nd elite half forward... the window is open now and Gamble simply isnt ready and i suspect at AFL might never be...

as much as all the prismal lovers on this board would be in grievance at this fact but if an offer is too good to refuse i am sure the cats will not be passing it up.

and i am not saying he should be traded, it is just the fact of football these days.

exactly..i am in no doubt that at the right club Prismall could play 200 games...but at the Cats he will not get a game in front of the 10 other midfield accumulators we have... and for team balance we need to keep speed in the team (Prismall is not quick) as this makes or breaks teams these days... so he simply would not be picked in front of a Tenace, Wojinksi, Varcoe, Byrnes, 'D'jerka, Davenport etc..

therefore if he has currency he should be traded

Prismal has good hand and foot skills but the problem that I see for him and for the team in general is that the centre line players that we have are too one paced. Kelly, Prismal, Bartel et al are all the one pace. Someone like Davenport should be elevated to the seniors. We need another centre line player who can run and break the lines. Gablett cannot shoulder the burden on his own. Yes, I know about Wojack! And he does carry the ball from half back. But I still think that we need another centre line player or an on baller who can carry the ball into the forward line. WC has Kerr, Cousins and Judd as ball carriers. The Cats need more options than they have at the moment.

I don't see any need to trade Prissa... or Davvers for that matter. Both are fine young talented athletes who add value to our team. I cannot believe people would wanna trade Pris, I seriously don't understand!!! Our trades will be taken up by Spence, Charlie etc anyways.

Can anyone explain how it all works, how many trades do we have to do?

Davenport and Prismall play totally diferent roles.Davenport is a outsider like a Wojcinski or Riccardi.Prismall is an in and under player like a Selwood or Bartel.

Wojcinski should take a look at how well Davenport can use the ball when running at full pace.

Both will slot into Geelongs team eventually.

As Jub said both are different players.

Do you mean delistings?

We don't have to do any trades, but we do have to take a minimum of three players in the main draft.

That means we need to get at least three off the senior list, either by delisting or trading. Any player we get via trade takes up a spot on the list and means we need to get rid of another to free up the three spots for draft picks (unless we lost as many as we received in the trade). If we trade a player for a pick that helps, although any draft picks we trade for must be used (cannot be passed), so we should make sure they are better picks than the top three we get anyway.

Its further complicated when rookies are promoted to the senior list, because they take up a spot. So we have three potential rookie promotions - Grima, Davenport and Lonergan - and if all three of them went up then we would have to get rid of at least six currently senior listed players.

Rookie draft is entirely separate.

Clear as mud?

My suggestion - as we are at the top right now and our premiership window is open, and this draft is not considered a super draft below the top 20 or so, we should take the minimum number of draft picks and promote all of Grima, Davenport and Lonergan because I think all three of them are capable of making a serious contribution to our AFL cause next year. To make room for them plus the three draft picks:
Delist - Spencer, Playfair, Gardiner, S Hunt, Callan
Trade for a better draft pick - one of Byrnes and Tenace

If we also can upgrade a pick by trading any of the delist group - eg. trade pick 34 (or whatever pick the premier gets in the second round (!)) and Playfair for pick 23 - then go for it, although I doubt any of them will have much currency.

I would then draft/rookie at least three talls, because losing Spencer, Playfair, Gardiner and S Hunt in one go will create a big hole in our back-up tall stocks.

Apparently Prismall and the Kanga' are keen on each other.
To get a reasonable draft pick we will have to give up a good player.Tenace, Prismall and Byrnes will be in demand. Some hard decisions will need to be made.Davenport needs to be promoted as we are short on quick, long and accurate kicking mid-fielders.We have plenty of in & under types and Selwood has now overtaken Prismall and Tenace.
Our needs for the future are tall KPBackman, trading will be the best way of doing this.

how good is davenports kicking though is it better than tenaces because i heard thats one flaw in his game is it up to afl standard?

it is lights years ahead of where it was last year...

with the way the modern game is played now, Davenport has all the makings of an AFL elite... the last midfielder I can remember who could kick 8 playing on a wing was G Ablett Snr...

barring injury he will play 25 games next year and probably win the rising star he has improved that much!

i just hope he doesn't need to wait another year before we can elevate him..

i know jase, he comes from my club and he has improved so much since his darno days. i hope he gets ellevated, if not we will more than happily have him over at tiger land. great bloke who i hope will be in the afl system for a long time!!!

Believe me. Geelong would have exhausted it's options on offering Charlie, H & co over the past few years. They virtually have zero trade value so don't bank on getting anything. Lets not forget, Kent was delisted at seasons end despite being a proven goal kicker at AFL level, something that H and Charlie have struggled with.

As for Pris I'd hang onto him but if there was a good offer on the table you'd be crazy not to look at it. We have a surplus of mids at the moment and he might seek opportunities elsewhere and Callan may do the same.

Davenport has certainly shown a bit this season so seeing him upgraded seems par for the course. This would however create further hurdles for Prismal, Tenace & Byrnes fighting for midfield/wing/flank spots.
