Round 1, 24 March 2018 - Etihad Stadium
StK 107 def Bris 82

I would say Armo had a solid match against the Lions. Don't remember anything too flashy but lots of workman-like stuff. Riding tackles and moving the ball forward. There was one extraordinary incident where a Brisbane player went to ground in the centre square, rolled a few times and in the process took out Armo's legs with his legs. No free kick. Luckily Armo recovered after limping around for a short while.

I think Dave will get better as he gets more games under his belt. He gets the ball (24 disposals), moves it on to another Saints player (87.5% DE) and can get the ball clear at stoppages (3 centre clearances and 1 around the ground). I think he could tackle more (2) and would love to see him kick some goals (0).

Key stats: 24 disposals, 7 contested; 87.5% DE (equal best with Gresham); 7 marks; 4 clearances; 2 tackles; 0 1%ers; 2 I50s; 0 goals; 0 behinds; 1 goal assist; 75% ToG

A good start to the year.

I'd say he got most of the contested possessions early in the game.

Round 2, 30 March 2018 (Good Friday) - Etihad Stadium
NM 95 def StK 43

As a team, terrible!

Armo: 27 disposals, 7 contested, 2 clangers, 3 clearances, no centre clearances, 2 tackles, 2 1%ers, 0 goals, 1 behind, 71% ToG, 66.7% DE

Given his stats weren’t too bad against Norff it’s surprising how many Big Footy Saints fans are calling for him to be dropped . Wasn’t our worst player by far.

Go Sainters.

Hard to get a centre clearance when your ruckmen is getting slaughtered.

Go Sainters.

Below par game by Armo on Saturday. Terrible disposal (46.2% DE), only 2 centre clearances, 2 1%ers and 1 tackle. He did kick a goal though. Will find it difficult to keep his spot given the reports of Steele doing well for Sandy.

13 disposals, 6 contested, 4 clangers, 2 clearances, 1 tackle, 2 1%ers, 1 goal, 0 behinds, 68% ToG, 46.2% DE

I think it is fair that after two solid but unspectacular games in the first two rounds, Armo played a shocker in round three against Adelaide and has been dropped. It will be interesting to see how he goes for Sandy in the curtain-raiser at Geelong. I wonder if his aging body let him down after just three rounds. Hopefully Richo is looking to reward players who play well and demote those who are not playing up to standard. It's a good precedent to set for the future team selection.

His DE has been shocking which is very surprising for Armo , it’s usually one of his strengths . I wonder if injuries have taken their toll on his body or is he just out of form.

Go Saints

VFL Round 2 - Geelong vs Sandringham - (Kardinia Park)
Geelong 9-8-62 def by Sandringham 9-10-64

I didn't see any of this match but it is a great result for Sandy and it sounds like Armo played very. He is second listed in Sandy's best players and I read on the game day thread that he had 31 possessions, 18 contested.

The boy can still play but can he do it on a regular basis at AFL level without upsetting the balance of the team!

"The balance of the team" !

With thanks to grimlock, a legend of a Sydney Swans supporter who always posts the player stats into our VFL game day thread, I can tell you that Armo's stats on the weekend were ...

18 kicks, 16 handballs, 3 marks, 7 tackles, 0 hit outs, 4 I50s, 2 R50s, 5 FF, 0 FA

Not sure what Darragh Joyce did to knock Armo off BoG for Sandy cause it certainly isn't apparent from the numbers. Good luck to the kid in any case.

Armo played for Sandy in their 10 Point loss to Port Melbourne today . Don’t know his stats yet but he was given 1 vote by whoever gives the votes for Sandy so he must have played pretty well .

Go Saints

Following 31 touches in last week's VFL win at Geelong, the veteran midfielder racked up 32 and kicked a goal in Sandringham's 10-point loss to Port Melbourne.

VFL Round 3 - Sandringham vs Port Melbourne - Trevor Barker Beach Oval
Sandringham 10.15-75 defeated by Port Melbourne 12.13-85

32 disposals, 1 goal and Armo was first listed in Sandy's best players. Another very strong performance at VFL level. Given the much-improved effort by the 22 who played against GWS I can't see Armo pushing his way into the senior team unless there is an injury or one of the younger players is rested. Not a bad ready-made replacement keeping the pressure on the guys in the middle.

For the record, with thanks to grimlock

Armo had 13 kicks, 20 handballs, 2 marks, 5 tackles, 0 hit outs, 1 I50, 1 R50, 2 FF, 1 FA and kicked 1.1 in the loss to The Borough.

Richo admits "We picked Dave too early"

Missed too much footy last year and was picked before he was ready. I think there is a bit of 20-20 vision in hindsight here. The VFL proper didn't start until the AFL was into R3 so the option would have been to play Armo in a couple of VFL practice matches which may or may not have given an indication of how he was going.

Anyway, it is good that Richo is prepared to admit he got it wrong and as we know, after 3 games at AFL he dropped Armo and he has been BoG and 2nd BoG for Sandy in his two VFL matches so far.

Promoted after two excellent games with Sandy, Armo put in another solid game for the Saints against Melbourne. Seemed to play more time forward than his previous two AFL games and he ended up kicking 2.1. I see several posters saying Armo is cooked. It may be the rose-coloured glasses of being his advocate but I don't see it myself. He is far from being our worst player.

Stats: 21 disposals, 5 contested, DE%61.9, 4 clangers, 3 marks, 2 tackles, 0 1%ers, 5 I50s, 2 goals, 1 behind, 86% ToG

If he can kick more than 1 goal , he might be our best full forward.

Only positive stat for Armo this week was disposal efficiency at 87.5% which is just as well because he only had the ball 8 times (3 kicks, 5 handballs). 80% ToG so no excuse there, perhaps an argument could be made that he played a lot of the game in our dysfunctional forward line but really it looks like his main contribution to the game was not attempting to take two balls that bounced in the goal square and he judged correctly were going through for goals.

I think he tried but his body is no longer up to it. In my last post I said Armo was far from our worst player, well this week he was our second worst player and that's only because Jake Carlisle was only on the ground for 33% of the match.

Stats: 8 disposals, 3 contested, DE% 87.5, 2 clangers, 2 marks, 3 tackles, 1 1%er, 1 I50, 0 goals, 0 behinds, 80% ToG
