David Clarke had a few good games in the reserves before being called upon to play against Brisbane at the Gabba in round eight of 1999. It was Clarke’s first year with the club after being selected under the father-son rule in 1998.

The then 19-year-old Clarke received a phone call from Gary Ayres on Thursday night to say he’d been making the journey to Brisbane. “I thought I was a 50:50 chance to make the cut, I was hoping I would be in,” said Clarke.

The then-captain Leigh Colbert, who was injured at the time, took the young mid-fielder under his wing. “Colby was great, he showed me the ropes,” Clarke said.

Clarke started the game on the bench. His first touch “fell in my hands” from a ruck tap out. “I picked the ball off the ground and gave a clean handball away,” Clarke recalled.

And from their it all went downhill!

Here's a good trivia question... how many Brownlow votes has David Clarke managed to poll in his AFL career so far??
