Thought this was thread worthy
absolute superstar at VFL level, gave 100% all the time and i think came close to being the VFL brownlow medalist, if he goes to another club he would be an absolute steal. Saying that our Midfield and our small forward area is pretty much covered and can't see him breaking either. Would be a shame to delist him as it is his last year on the rookie list. But I can't see a place for him on the list. So whats the verdict, retain or delist?

As much as id love to see Ellard retained, i think its time we let him go to allow the guy an opportunity to play AFL footy elsewhere.

He's not going to break into our midfield, with players like Grigg and Hadley ahead of him for the fringe midfield places.

The boy has talent and deserves a fair go that he unfortunately will not get here.

I just think he might be too small and his kicking might not be good enough and now there is McLean, Hadley and Grigg ahead of him, I recon he might find himself in the draft and perhaps we'll have to redraft him. He has improved a lot though. His game in the VFL grand final and prelim final did him no favors.

If you love him...you must set him free!

Richmond would pounce

But I voted retain, because I hate to see quality leave

WE MUST KEEP HIM! We drafted him two years ago as a small forward and developed him into a hard at it midfielder. it would be a waste to cut him now he is better than just a fringe player. With a good preseason he could be in our starting 22 for round 1. If we keep wiggins our he then there is something wrong.

Saw him play live in the Prelim and Grand Finals for the Bullants, and he can seriously play - well at VFL level anyway. What the club will have to do is weigh up whether retaining him on our list will be better than what they believe they can draft into the club in the upcoming drafts. I'd be thinking about hanging onto him, and Jacobs for that matter as well.

I think, HBF, his decision making is what lets him down - And I'm not sure how long you can give a player to develop that before conceeding that a bloke just can't develop it. This aspect of his game is found lacking even at VFL level, where the pace is significantly slower. That said I think it just means he may be more a forward (which I believe he was drafted as) than anything, there he can play on instinct, rather than have to think through situations.

I think thats a good idea too, draft him too the club, his status as contracted ensures us some leverage, and him some extra dollars while we have room to move, and suggest to him that he'll be going back to WCE/Freo soon - Could well see us net something valuable for him in a trade.

Jacobs is a must. Allows Hampson/Kreuze to find their groove in the forward line. Should Warnock not make it through a season, Jacobs is more than capable of pinch hitting.

*cues* Gunslinger...
I think he has worked very hard and deserves a shot at AFL competition. I of course would like him to get that with the Blues. He has plenty of fire in the belly and I think would step up. Certainly has his failings eg small, slow, not the best skills but makes up for it with grim determination and ability to work through tough situations. He has shown he can play forward, out back and run through the midfield. Can run with a player, win his own ball and run off to be a goal threat.
I of course say the wablues own D Ellard should get a gig, but if not I hope he does get a chance elsewhere. Time is running out for him and he has done enough.

I don't think he's at AFL standard yet. However, David's a quality kid and I'd love to give him as many chances as possible. If that means delisting him and re-rookieing him then that's what we should do. He's a great example to others in attitude and application.

I'm not sure I would agree with you on this one BTP. In fact, I thought his disposal and decision making were pretty good in the games I saw him live. He has certainly come on a long way snce he debuted against West Coast in 2008, and with two years worth of development into him, I don't think I would be letting him go now.

Yeah I was a bit tentative to say decision making, but I feel that's what it is - Just seems that when he hits targets they're always under the pump, or rarely released into space. Does a better job of it than I could though!

But how damned impressive was Browne - Courage personified in those last two weeks.

Has been on the rookie list for 2 years and played 1 game. No point keeping him if he isnt going to get any games. Is too small to play AFL. One of those players who is good in VFL but not good enough for AFL.

I dont really see then need to upgrade Jacobs. We have Kruezer, Warnock and Hampson for the ruck. Cant see him playing too much AFL footy in the next year or 2.

Every sentence in this post I could argue with - except maybe the last. But Jacobs is a MUST as a back up at the VERY LEAST.

As for Ellard, 'no point keeping him if he isn't going to get any games'... I'd suggest once he is eligible to play senior footy, he will play senior footy, I think there's a few roles he could play as opposed to the McLean/Hadley/Grigg roles.

I'm skeptical he'd make it. But supposing this is true, I'm starting to think we should have kept pick 11 and chosen the best available midfielder and tall with picks 11 and 12.

No disrespect to McLean but, particularly if we pick up Bradshaw our list starts to get old very quickly. Supposing Ellard were to come on, we'd have a surplus of midfielders in the Ants with insufficient teenagers developing alongside them.

Dude he played 1 game last year and couldn't crack a game this year even Bentley got a game ahead of him.He is not worth promoting in my opinion i just don't see where he will fit Betts,Yarran and Gartlett are ahead of him for forward pocket position plus we keeping Wiggins,Cloke And Johnson if his contracted.

McLean is 24 before the start of next season and replaces Stevens who is 30 in January making our list 6 years younger and Bradshaw is 2 years older than Fev,meaning with the ins oand outs of those 2 players we are 4 years younger, so how the hell do we start to get old Quickly, thats naming only 2 players and not taking into consideration the players who have been delisted and will be replaced with 18 year old kids. Id really love to know how you came up with that statement, please explain(in my best Pauline Hanson Voice)

It happened in 1997, and again in 2002. Every established player you bring into the club reduces the number of young kids at the lower end, both in terms of spots on the list and game time. Consider over the past 3 trading periods we've parted with five top 24 draft picks. Given our miss-and-miss record of PSD selections, that puts a lot of pressure on the kids we do bring through in the pick 60-80 range, most of whom won't make it. Which in turn leads to delistment and gambling on a few more late round selections. Hence the ageing of the list.

Anys started him fwd, ran him off the back line and through the midfield. He can fill any void provided. What will be will be!

He would have been in the team if he was eligible in the 2nd half of the season. Anyone who wants to argue with that go ahead. I think Carlton would acknowledge they made a mistake nominating Bentley ahead of Ellard. but look, Ellard will be hungry in 2010 to prove the doubters wrong. I genuinely think he will come on.
