David retires tomorrow after 30 year. That's an impressive run. But I hear so many people dis on the guy.

Your thoughts on him? Was he a genius who turned a near bankrupt league into one of the biggest leagues in the world, or was it mainly driven by luck. The start of the cable era, Michael Jordan factor etc.

He took the game from an American dominated sport to thriving internationally.

Some stats:

From 1984 to 2014
Number of teams - 24 to 30
Revenue - $0.165b - $5.5b
Average salary - $330,000 to $5,700,000
Average Attendance - 10,620 to 17,269

Thoughts?

Forever in debt to the great man! If it wasn't for Stern, there would be no Sacramento Kings. Instead we would have Anaheim Royals or Seattle Supersonics instead!

His refs might have screwed us over against the Lakers in that infamous series but he kept the Kings were they belong and managed to get some real groundwork going on the new arena.

Thank you the Stern one!

Every night when he goes to sleep, I hope he says a massive thank you to Michael Jeffery Jordan.

If it wasn't for him, I imagine the NBA would be somewhere around the value of the NHL today.

Very good CEO but he was very lucky to take over the same time Jordan came into the league.

He should be thanking Bird and Magic first.

Overall he has turned the league into a very successful one. He's always going to be loved or hated by fans.

You can either hate him for making kids go to College, you can hate him for how soft the game has become, you can hate him for the poor officiating that so often ruins games, for allowing Seattle to die and you can hate him for numerous other things like the CP3 veto.

Or you can love him for saving the Kings, making the most of Bird, Magic and MJ's popularity to help turn the league into one of the world's biggest, cleaning up the image of the league, pushing the NBA to markets like ours, being one of the leader's in the online sports market etc.

Him and a certain arseh*le from OKC will forever be my top two most hated people involved with the NBA... I'm sure he's done great things for the NBA, but well I was a Sonics fan, that should say it all :(

I mean if I had a gun with two bullets and was locked in a room with Hitler, Bin Laden and Stern, I would shoot Stern twice...

Well, the other two are dead, so not much point shooting them :p
