I didn't search to see if there was a thread already like this because frankly I wouldn't even know what search terms to use but I just thought I'd post an amusing story from last night.
I was playing a cash game at a friends house and there were some raw beginners there. We were all just there for a bit of fun. Anyway, a few of them were playing ridiculous hands with the "gotta be in it to win it" philosophy as a lot of beginners do. One guy played 7 2 off suit and I told him it was the worst possible hand you could get. It became a bit of a theme of the night like when someone would fold we'd say, "oh, he must have 7 2o."
I get dealt 7 2o and thought it'd be a laugh to play it coz the blinds were only 2/5 (btw, we were playing it so each dollar of chips was worth 5c at the end of the night when you cash in). Someone raised to ten and I thought why not? Flop comes up 3 4 5 so I'm not feeling too bad now. We both check and an ace comes up on the turn. She pushes all in (she was very much the short stack) and I call. She turns over A A and has three of a kind but my straight with 7 2o beat her.
There's probably not a lot of point in bagging her choice not to raise bigger pre-flop because she doesn't play poker so didn't really know what was going on.
Not that the highest ranked hand losing to the lowest ranked hand can be beaten but does anyone else have similar stories where they've won with ridiculously bad hands that turned good up against strong hole cards?
